The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thank you for the compliment on the eggs. I love the eggs and am still amazed at how much darker they are than your traditional brown eggs.

Yes, mine are very dark, also. I also have some Cuckoo Marans who lay very dark eggs. And in between, a number of them lay entertaining speckled eggs.

I have a rainbow basket, which I really like.

Wish there were some Croad Langshans in this country.

Afternoon Wellie lovers,

Have a question. Need to reduce the number of roos in my laying flock and my alpha is a RIR. Next alpha roo will probably be my Welsummer, who will be a year old this spring. Does the Welsummer breed have what it takes to be the flock defender/watcher as my hens free range year round? Have hawks in the area and lost one my Welsummer hens last week, of course it was one of my best ones. Also, have a young BCM as well as a young Wheaten Maran roo in the same flock until spring time breeding season. Appreciate any input/opinions. Love my Wellies!

Not all of them are suited to be flock protector. Just give the ol boy some girls of his own and he will protect them. Be expected for him to give up his life if he chooses that path to protect the girls from hawks or any other predators.

Just want to see what you all think of my Welsummer pullet. She's about 7 months old. Sorry I couldn't get better pics, the roo likes to keep his ladies away from me...

My RIR roo met an untimely end last summer when he attacked me. RIP, roo.

So far, my Welsummer roo seems very gentle, and just goes around with the gals looking for things for them to eat.

I think the best flock protector is an English Shepherd.

Ok, I think Moose tagged my light brahma. I don't understand how, when the babies are still hiding in the coop all day and she's my head hen, (it's been 9 days since I put them in) but I guess he got a hold of her. (I don't think it's the BR cockeral because he's still getting beat up on, while they seem to be ignoring Moose) Sure enough, I cracked 2 of her eggs today and they are both fertile.

He'll be 15 weeks tomorrow. I didn't expect him to be doing his ummm "job" this soon.

Cloverleaf, she is one pretty Wellie! Chunky built too LOL! Can't blame the roo for competing for the beautiful girl LOL! After all, he got a good eye for her LOL!
