The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Yep - there are two actually. The other one has a much larger comb and it has turned a distinct shade of pink/red which is why I am thinking that this one is a girl. The other one also has an almost completely black neck and upper chest. He also struts around with his little tail (which is much longer) stuck straight up in the air.

So I am basing the "girl" ruling on comparison with him. If this one is a boy too, then he is definitely going to be a beta male.

I went with your good advice and ordered 25 for myself yesterday from Estes. Mine are due to arrive on the 12th. They were very nice on the phone. I look forward to getting them.

I went with my own advice and ordered 90 chicks for myself and others and 71 of them are welsummers. Estes is also the only hatchery I know of that sells welsummer pullets. They should arrive next Tuesday so I getting excited.

I ordered a few girls from MPC- but I thought they were using Meyer. Maybe not? I'm hatching like crazy so I need some extra girls in case I need to sell off roos in pairs. Wish I would have waited and made a bigger order

I ordered 25 pullets and she said she would throw in a couple roos for free so it will be interesting to see what I get. I can't wait!

I have 3 Welsummers in my brooder right now that are from Estes. I know this is a longshot, but one has ridiculously dark, almost black striping and the other two are more typical colored. I'm only keeping one, do you think it matters which one I keep for the darkest eggs? I have no idea if it's linked to chick plumage or not.

Either way, I can't wait to see her eggs!

Well my hatch date was yesterday. It could have been alot better. I don't know what caused it to go wrong but I got four chicks to hatch. Only one Welsummer! This morning day 22 I decided to listen to the eggs and see if there were any that were still alive in there.

I opened all nine eggs. The very last one chirped. I was hopeful I could save it. I helped him/her out of the shell only to find the beak was twisted and one eye was missing.

So... this morning I have one welsummer chick and three other chicks. Thats 4 out of 13.

The only welsummer that made it I hope is a girl.. and she is looking good. What do yall think girl/boy?
