What stock does Moose come from, he is a really nice rooster!!!

Thanks, he's a great rooster. He came from Bargain (Nancy's) stock. Later this year or early next year, I plan on adding some unrelated females from another breeder. Then I will probably cull Feisty to my layer flock.

Do you by chance know the bloodline?

I don't, but I can find out from Nancy.

Fiesty is a tad bit off color. I think I'd like that. It would help me to tell her apart from the others. I put a lot of stock in good egg color myself. She might not win in the show ring, but if she lays lovely eggs, what's the harm? You never know, she might throw perfectly colored chicks once you cross her to Moose.

On the other hand, I have 2 hens that are perfectly colored AND lay gorgeous eggs, but they aren't even in with a rooster. I wouldn't consider breeding them because I got a lot of feather stubs on the legs from that line. That's my pet peeve. Wretched feather stubs! One hen has them and the other doesn't, but still I wouldn't risk it. I sure do love those big bold eggs though. Beautiful.

Anyhoo, your birds are lovely. I have some from Bargain also, and they do lay nice eggs. Your Moose resembles my Beauregard. Very handsome.

That's exactly how I tell her apart from my other girl.

I am curious about mating her to Moose, so I will try it and see. I too love the dark color egg. My other girl has more standard body coloring, but her egg is not nearly as dark. But both of them are fairly new to laying. (They are 8 months old)

Chooks~ You already know I think that Moose is just GORGEOUS.....now you're just teasing us!!

You should try crossing Moose and Fiesty to see what you can get in regards to better color in the offspring. I bet upon maturity you have some nicely colored birds. That Moose has some great qualities that he will lend to his kiddos.

As handsome as Moose would be, I would be finding better girls for him, IMO!

However, as for the chestnut colored Welsummer girl, I would not breed her for pure Welsummer, after all, down the line, you will have alot of chestnut colored Wellies or something of wrong colors popping up unless you tell the customers that this is a cross of a Welsummer and pet quality Welsummer. And the egg color would get passed down as well as the feather stubs. Those would put you backwards in the breed. Like the white Welsummer or Buff Welsummer that a few people got and were disappointed.

The feather stubs were on some of my birds, not new2chooks' birds. I should add that those weren't from Bargain's eggs. I didn't have that problem with her birds. But I know that it is a problem! A terrible problem. My pet peeve. Yuck, feather stubs!

There is a marked difference in colouring between Chick-let and the other 2; she seems much darker. Does this indicate anything? They are almost twice the size now than they were when we got them at 2 days...

Bossy-boots doesn't hold her tail as high; again does this mean anything?
