about BCMs! I haven't done enough research about Marans but all I know they are dark laying breeds, comes in English or French, feathered legs or not, comes in Cukoo, BC, White, Wheaton, Black and Blues.

Are you sure it is not crossed with a Sussex? Or a blue wheaton of some sort.....it is not a pure Welsummer that I can see!

Yep a roo of course!

That roo is going thru that UGLY stage!

I would not get another roo until you have at least a half dozen hens for him. It is not fair to the sweet hens to be mated that frequently by the roo. A roo can actually stress out the hens to the point that they stop laying. . . . .

If he was a good boy in his previous home, then there is a good chance that he would be a good roo in another place.

Thanks! I don't know if I will ever have that many hens! I guess myself and the friend that gave him to me didn't think about what you are saying. I feel bad for both of them now! I am still looking for him a home. Hopefully I will find one soon!

So about 2 weeks ago I got a laying hen( wellie) and I know after coming to a new home they can stop laying 2 days later she laid an egg skipped a day laid and egg skipped a day and laid another now it's been about 4 days NO egg I live in montana and we had a cold front and then it got sunny again then cloudy and sunny...etc...could this be why she isn't laying or should I be worried...my Wyandotte Lacie lays every other day got her from the same man as the wellie My wellie is also a year old....

Hi all, I'm new to this chicken thing. We had chickens years ago but they were egg and meat sources, never thought of them as per their breed. So, now I find myself with Wellsummers (at least that's what they were sold to us as!!) and Marans. (same story). I am pretty sure they are what they were said to be, but I have no idea if they are good birds or not. I am interested in getting some fertile eggs for the granddaughters to hatch and maybe show. I'll post some pics......have at 'em. I need feedback good, bad, and ugly. Just be kind, as I am getting attached to them! Are they okay to breed for the kids to show? If not, what should I look for in a replacement?

Thanks,
Anne
