The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Hens~ I cannot begin to tell you how much I love all the different eggs. It's like going to the ice cream shop and trying the new flavor of the day everyday! Like yesterday, I got the coolest olive egg ever.......olive in some places with like swirls of even darker olive almost brown around the bottom and top and one side. Reminded me of a pinto horse pattern. I ate it for breakfast this mornin'! Yummy!

I would love to know what you think of this cockeral. He's 8 months old. His waddles are discolored because of a fight he had with the other roo (sinced rehomed) a few weeks ago. You won't hurt my feelings if he's not very good.

His colors are very vivid and beautiful. Give his wattles some more time to heal and I bet they go get back to a pretty normal color. One of my boys was stomped by a bigger one for getting into the bigger ones pen and he took a few good bashes to his wattles and comb, months later his wattles are back to their normal color with a slightly lighter colored scar where it had been slashed open.

I would love to see pictures of this boy out at play where we might see him all stretched out and not looking over his shoulder at the camera person. LoL! Sometimes they get all worried over that weird shiny and flashing thing that we carry around.

I have not had any problems with Welsummer combs during the winter but then again we have pretty mild winters with the occassional cold snap and they do just fine, but our winters out here are nothing compared to a Chicago area winter. I suspect they will be fine. I know Nate (SFIcelandics) and Ewesheep live in colder climate areas and they have not reported any comb issues. Hoping more come by and give their opinions for you.

IMO....you will L-L-L-OOOOOOVE Welsummers if you get them!

Yes, they do fine - but depending on the weather and with any breed of chicken you are going to get some degree of frost bite up here in WI! It is usually the very tips of the combs of the males. Unlike my marans where it got really bad, so I replaced him with a smaller combed roo. I wouldnt let the weather discourage you on getting welsummers - They are my favorite, and my most plentiful of any breed that I have listed on my website! I think I have around 30 LF, and 25 BF welsummers!

BF - Bantam Fowl

I think total I have about 45 hens, 10 roosters.

My 2 wellies where 28 weeks yesterday, and still no eggs. My BR, EE, BO, BA, and Ancona have been lying since 25 weeks, but my Wellies, Silkie and Splash BLRW, are still free loading.

I got my very first egg Christmas Day, and the girls were 28 weeks old on Christmas Eve...what a nice surprise for me. I got another yesterday (Dec 26), but so far none today, and it is almost 4 pm...
