The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Didn't he have a chicken tragedy as well, a tree fell or something collapsed and killed a bunch of his chickens?

I had pre-paid for some Welsummer chicks from Nate. About a week ago he email me and said that predators had killed all of his roosters and he would be sending me a refund. I emailed him back and told him that if he thought he would find a rooster I would wait. But, he said he wasn't having any luck finding one. So, I took his advice and purchased some from another breeder.

Thanks for letting me know

I will keep looking.

All my birds are from Nate's lines, but I only sell hatching eggs, I don't ship chicks.

We have plenty of eggs for sale as I haven't really advertised them until recently.

That's great that we have such good resources. A good example of the importance of sharing good quality stock. Thanks Fay and search4one for the information.

Wow! A HUGE thank you to all those that have sent along the information they have. It is amazing that so many of you replied in such short amount of time! What would us chicken lovers do without eachother?

I will be following up on all these leads in the next couple of days. I think I have crazy chicken eyes...

Regarding to Nate as we both emailed each other, yes it is true. This winter has been very rough on the birds. Full shed with a destroyed roof (he got a lot of snow and those old sheds, they can not hold the weight), and as soon as the weather warmed up, predators were out in full force, nabbing his prized birds. He was just so frustrated, costing him time and money. Like the old saying trying to get ahead three steps, only to find yourself going ten steps behind. There are not enough birds to make sure he can fufill his chick and egg orders and diversity needed to have a "closed" flock and he needed to increase the numbers of birds to get back where he needs to be going at this rate. I am hoping the year 2012 would be better for him, with updated or new buildings, he talked about getting concrete floors done so predators would not have a chance at all coming into the building. What's worst, he lost his roosters and he would not have fertile eggs from his hens being rooster-less.

He thought about getting rid of all of it after it was said and done with all this upheaveal but I talked to him to keep going even it is bad. Take care of the facilities the birds are on, and when that is done, he can work on replenishing his flock and bring back the numbers he once had.

I could not believe how much snow up north got, had a couple of friends with broken roofs on their barns, not a pretty sight and whats worst, many of them didn't have insurance. UGH! I hope Nate has insurance on his barns. So this year, it is his time to replenish his flock, work on what he knows on the breed themselves and maybe, who knows, he might end up getting better birds!

So it is time for us to refer eggs and chicks, so please do let me know so buyers can look at the WCNA website under Breeders and they can pick and choose the closest breeders in their area. Or buy better Welsummers.

If anyone else wanted to focus on Nate's lines, FaykokoWV or contact Nate himself to see if anyone else has his lines. I have three of his girls, another friend of mine has a trio (from me) for 4H showing this year (and I will be hoping to get some eggs from her as well).
