I don't know. I too like the dark coloring.

I know Kim has a dark one in her flock (#18), she's posted pics of her before. I have a darker chick from her growing out as well.

Hello,
I have my first batch of wellies in the bator,Ill be putting them in lockdown on sunday.
So far all of the 10 wellies look good but man it is really hard to see in them.
Please pray for them and my patience.Im checking on those so much already. We had one crack with a bit of goo come out so im always checking for that.
Ive had ideal wellies in the past but look forward to some good quality from the incubation.
thank you
renee

Hi Renee! Are we safe to assume you threw the oozing egg away?

You only have a few more days to go until hatch! I love this time...near the end when the date is circled on the calendar and you search eagerly for that first pip! Best of luck on your hatch!

Thanks for sharing the pictures! Here is one that we hatched out this year and he won't be used except maybe for dinner! In fact, once I have some extra room we will be testing to see which of the 2 hens and/or 2 roosters is throwing this type

I am not an expert by any means.but the first roo has a more correct color pattern. Can not see his comb in the pic, but the second roo is to light colored(flame) in the hackles and the comb is not good either.By using the lighter colored hackled roo, the chances of getting the salmon coloer hen, like pictured , will be much higher. He could be used to lighten darker hens., But I would guess that her has been diluted with some other bloodline, so would not use him. That is based on my experiace in my flock. When I used a roo like that , over salmon colored hens, I got about 5 percent white chicks. I culled the entire line, rather that try to "fix " it. They did not lay eggs of the correct color. to light, although they had lovely small specks on them. My lone calicowood hen. layed the nicest speclked eggs, very conistantly, about 5 a week, She always takes 2 day off in a row, some time 6 and then 2 days off, sometime 5 and then 2 days off.She does not lay quiet as large of egg as my grisham line, but lays a more oval egg. My grisham line layes very well, but does tend to lay some kida torpedo shaped eggs once in a while. The hatch rate on my grisham line, is better than my calicowood hen, though. I have swicthed roos, so maybe it was the roo, but he was very fertile with the othger hens in the pen. so maybe she needs some trimming in the vent area. My other line are rock stars both in laying and egg color. The fugate line came from very good layers. Professed to lay an egg almost every day, and I would belive it.The color is more terra cota than my Grisham line. they lay better, and for the most part are no speckled kind of eggs. With 8 pullets in that pen now that have been in lay about 2 months, they consitantly lay 6 a day, sometime 7 or 8 never less than 5. My Grisham layed about like the calicowood. 4 or 5 then a day off the 3 or 4 then a day off. I have another gruop of the fugate /crossed over grisahm coming on, and they are going to lay like the fugate. These are out of my mid december to new years hatch. 8 or 9 total wellies in the pen, with some marans. I have been getting 4 to 6 wellie eggs a day and 3 or 4 marans eggs. I ahve sold severasl out of that gruop in the last week, but the egg production has remained, so either I sold non layers, or more are coming into lay. Just some ideas on what my wellies do.

great information, thanks for the tip about the lighter colored roo helping to lighten hen coloring! I don't have him any more, but that's the kind of information I was lookin for.

I get an average of 4 eggs a week out of each of my hens. They are very picky about the weather though. Too cold or too much rain and they back off on the laying. I haven't weighed any of my eggs, but I will see if I can find some food scales and weigh them.

Is it common to have a hen that lays a dark egg occassionally pop out a lighter colored one once in a while?
