The Welsummer Thread!!!!

We have 1 or 2 girls that put speckles on their eggs but it varies from day to day- of course my kids figure that the speckles are caused due to "farting" by the hen as the egg is going through the paint booth!

Contrastphoto......my rooster is not the cuddly type, but he's a good boy. He's a great protector of my hens, treats them well and is not rough on them mating. He's very respectful of me also.

We have 5 Wellie girls and they are very good layers- this past month we collected 83 eggs from them alone. The roosters are in a separate run from the hens but when they make the preditor noise the girls run for cover. My kids can go into all the pens with no worries at this time

Congrats to all those who received recognition awards

Right On! Go Girls! I haven't even thought of counting how many the girls are blessing us with..but they are clipping right along. And I am so in love with all the different speckled and smooth eggs. I have one gal that gave me one of those purplish speckles over the Terra Cotta color today.....these have to be my personal favorites.

In the interest of education, I wanted to show some pictures side by side and let the experts point out the flaws of the one and the good qualities of the other. Ewesheep, other experts, can you please give some commentary as if you were judging. I know that looking at pictures side by side and getting PM's with critiques helped me to learn so I thought I would share. When I had my first birds I thought they were beautiful and I couldn't tell the difference between them and better quality stock because I had no idea what I was supposed to be looking for. I'm still learning what is good vs bad. I'm sure others on here have pictures they could share that show specific qualities to watch out for and specific qualities we should try to keep, if so I'd love to see them.

Thanks for posting that Fay, I'm just getting started with these wonderful birds and look forward to learning how to bring my flock more in line with the SOP.

On another note,
Thank You Kim (pinkchick)!!!

I received the eggs today and all i can say is wow!

I now know how to pack eggs well and i mean superbly...not a crack or chip on them. They probably arrived in the exact same spot you packed them.

I look forward to recycling your packing materials and technique. I'll edit in some pics a lil later. For now those beauties are resting from there journey all the way across the country.

Thanks again
Ivy
