The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I hatched a Welsummer last night. He/she is adorable and much better looking than my Maran chick that hatched a few weeks ago! I wish I had more of them - but my Welsummer was the only one to hatch out of 3

Anyway - now for my question: my camera isn't working so I don't have any pics of my adorable Wellie chick, but I don't know whether it is male or female. I'm new to chicks and all that, so can anyone give me any tips on sexing Welsummers?

Thanks for the detailed info!! The first batch of your eggs is in the incubator and I put 2 under the Wyandotte that went broody. The second batch of eggs should be here today, Sat, else the PO lost them somewhere. Eggs were GORGEOUS!!

My hatch in the foam bator of mixed bantam LF from another vendor was dismal (po scramble and bator probs) had 2 hatch out and one peeping that ended up DIS, others were DIS earlier in development, I'm thinking when I changed from the bator to the hatcher. I also have something funky going on in there with the turner because I looked in there this morning and several eggs were topsy turvy and 3 were along side the turner on the wire. Guess it pitched over the larger eggs or something. So I rearranged things in there. I'm trying to dry incubate, since humidity stayed at 45-55% during the last batch without adding water and that would be opening it up less. It doesn't have a fan in it.

I am seriously looking at ordering a cabinet bator!! AND if the wyandotte sets these ok, I will be slipping MORE under her! But all the hens lay their brown eggs in there, too.

Gotta get some wellies hatched from this next batch! Eggs are too pretty to waste!

Just to clarify, is she concidered to be darker than normal or is she the standard color. She almost look like she gets darker towards the back, but I can't tell if that's just the way the picture looks.

I have four chicks in the brooder right now. One seems to be a pullet, distinct eye liner and "V" on top of head. One seems to be a cockerel, no eye liner and blurry "V" on top of head. The other two have the distinct "V" on the top of their heads but no eye liner, pullets or cockerels?

What about the black on the hen in the cape/neck feathers? Is that ok to standard or should that be bred out?

Woopee, got my eggs in, 12 whole, 1 cracked so I checked it for that bullseye that says it is fertile, and of course it was!

Not sure if the Wyandotte is going to set now or not. The sirens went off in town at noon like forever for their monthly check and they are just one house over from us and REALLY LOUD!! Argh!

Foam bator temps seem to be holding stable.

Poor little Cassidy, it sure looks like a slipped tendon across her 'knee' and it is all puffy out to the side. I get her out and stretch the leg back a bit, don't know if it is helping. She was born Sunday so she is getting pretty old to slip that tendon back and the bump out to the side is preventing it as well. It has a sore on the side now so put neosporin on it. I'm giving her a few more days. She gets around, eats and sleeps ok, other chicks peck at that leg/sore.Other chicks are now growing faster than her, too.

I don't think that she is considered darker than normal...all of my girls are very similar in color to her. I will get some new photos of her and the other girls.

About Cassidy and her slipped tendon....have you tried rolling the tendon with your thumb? I read somewhere that you could gently roll the tendon from the side of the knee joint back up and over the back of the knee where it is suppose to be located. In other words the tendon runs down the back of the leg. I hope she gets better for you.
