The Welsummer Thread!!!!

OK folks for those of you who would like to promote the Welsummer breed and selling hatching eggs, do you think it would help your sales a bit by saying "a member of the WCNA" ?

After all, many of you ARE WCNA and it would be interesting to see how many of you are on the auction sites and it would give some validity of the bloodlines of your Welsummers, and producing better than the hatchery stock or aiming the goal for the standards of our Welsummers.

Does it help? I rarely see anyone else saying APA/UOC, Marans Club, etc.

No, I got them from Ruth in Martindale. I may get a roo from Ernie in Elgin if he still has any (not sure if you know who that is).

OK, I'm just gonna throw this out there and see what happens (if I don't ask, it's an automatic "no"). Is there anyone out there who will sell sexed Welsummer chicks? I want breeder quality, not hatchery chicks. My luck with straight run chicks is just plain AWFUL. I live in an area that's in the country, but I really am not supposed to have a rooster (as you've seen, I have "JD", a nice cockerel from PinkChick's line; I'm hoping the neighbors will let me slide a while when I bribe them with lovely eggs - he is not crowing yet, and everything I have is at least 2 months from laying, so at this point I have nothing to bribe them with...). I can't raise the cockerels long enough for freezer camp. I know it's getting into the hot months. I live in the Central Valley in California and will gladly drive to pick them up; if you've got them available to ship as babies from another state, I can't receive them prior to 7/12 as I'll be gone.... So many issues!!!! I figured I may as well ask... if I get a bunch of "laughing smiley faces" I'll know this is a crazy request....!!! Thanks for any help.

ChikieLyn, I not laughing at you, I'm just wondering how I might be able to help you. California is several miles from Michigan so you are probably not going to pick them up. I normally don't sell eggs or chicks and only on rare occasions have I shipped eggs. I'm not sure how much shipping chicks in this heat would work out because of the distance.

You're right. I may just have to wait until next year. Hard to get a good start at this time of the year. Learning the hard way, I guess. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask, someone might know someone in California who might sell a pullet or two or three.... Next year I'll have my ducks in a row (pardon the pun) and I'll probably be hatching eggs...

(Opa, it's very hard to read your posts without hearing Sam Elliott's voice.... very distracting in a very nice way....LOL "Beef, it's what's for dinner!"...)

I do have a distinctive voice and have been told that I resemble him. I guess I probably do if you stand about 300 yards away and squint.

Opa, you are a funny guy!

ChickieLyn..... If I had any extra's, I would sell them to you, but I don't have any extras. Maybe you can ask for a bator for your birthday, anniversary, etc?

I'm not sure how to phrase this, but I'm going to try to make myself clear. If anything I say needs clarified I'll try to explain better.

I don't think being a member of the WCNA = quality stock automatically. Granted, most who join want to improve their stock but it doesn't mean good stock is already there. If we want the group open to any who want to join, we have to assume there are going to be different levels of quality. Unless you restrict members (which I'm guessing we don't want to do) there's a risk of the WCNA being associated with poor stock as well as good.

I think the seller was saying that the Amish like the eggs, not that they got them from the Amish??? Did you ask for pictures of the birds? I'd love to see different lines like that. I'm still learning all the history and I had no idea there were that many imported lines.
