The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Another wellie is zipping. (it's been zipping all darn day, I wish it would hurry up!) I think the other wellie egg is a quitter. Nothing yet on the last olive egger egg. I'm going to candle any unhatched eggs tonight.

Since I wasn't able to work out a shipment with Fay, these are from my flock - more Moose/Cleo babies. This is her first time being a mom, so I didn't want to overwhelm her with tons of chicks. 4-5 will be a good number. She doesn't mind me lifting her up for a peek, but she's NOT happy if I pick them up.

Attention Kim!!!!!! The dark pullet I have from you laid her first egg today! She's a couple days short of 21 weeks. It's a nice, splotchy egg. I was shocked - I've never had them start laying before 24 weeks! When I have a chance, I'll get a picture for you. The other girl will be several more weeks, her comb isn't as big as this girls.

OMG - you are so lucky! Splotchy and early!!!! My two girls will be 24 weeks tomorrow; one looks ready to lay (in my unskilled eyes) and one hasn't started to mature yet. We run home and check out the lay boxes, but nothing yet.... just can't wait! I love to hear about everyone else's events - soon I'll have my own!

Let me see....running to get my hatching calendar.

My oldest chicks hatched on 4-8. So 19 weeks old. I am not really expecting anyone to lay until Oct. 6 mos is a good time to start worrying about it.

Congratulations on all accounts Chooks!!! That's AWESOME and that is the sweetest photo of mamma and her babies. I think you are right about that little guy being a roo.

I just hatched my first Welsummer OE last weekend...along with a few true Wellies.

I have about a dozen more Wellies in the bator due to hatch this weekend. Someone gave me advice and I've been using it...not to increase the humidity with Wellies in the last few days (lockdown). Whomever that was, thank you! I've had better success this year because of it!

Where in the foothills of NC are you located?

I dont have any hatching eggs right now because I lost my only roo. As soon as I can find a replacement roo, I might can help you out with some fertile eggs.
