When I first got my Welsummer stock, I noticed the same. I hatched them from eggs, so contamination wasn't the issue. They were birds descended from Barber stock. My other 4 varieties had no problem with it. I culled every bird that showed it for a few generations and now haven't seen it in a couple years. I believe there is a genetic susceptibility to it.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Has anyone had success soaking their eggbound girls? It did not work for one of my silkies a few months back. Leaves us feeling frustrated like we could have done more! Don't blame yourself!

I've only had 2 Black Copper Marans with it. Both from Sue Osio. When paying for the chicks, I noticed what looked like compacted dirt on the toe of one chick...she ripped it off, left a crater, and made the chick bleed.

I treated it when I got home (topically) and put her in the brooder. That was around November. Both of the chicks...grew up to have bumblefoot in both feet...and not the tiny scab with the core pocket of infection inside...both had huge scabs...about the size of a nickel. None of the brooder mates or other chicks I've hatched have had this problem.

Hi Beesong!!!! Yep...bobcats cruise around up here during the day too...one unfortunate bobcat is center stage on my neighbors mantle. I am glad that he got it.....being that he got it as it was crawling out of a hole in my fence.
