The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Caught a few photos of the girls a couple days ago out free ranging and playing around and thought I would share.

Here is my youngest girl who I do not believe that I will be using for breeding. Not altogether happy with her egg color. It's a lovely light Terra Cotta color and not the deep rich color that I was expecting, but she is a nice girl.

#8 the Trouble Maker and despite her name she is one of my favorite chickens. :)

and can't remember which one this is as she lost leg band, but I believe she is #17. Geesh! LOL!

The ameruacana's will have willow legs if pure bred. They will also have muff and a bread on their face where the welsummers do not and yes they will have yellow legs.
Welcome to byc hope you enjoy the site and the people.

Don't wish folks to think the only reason I ever come here is to police what others have posted but I feel the need to correct the above. Hopefully FirewifeJess sees this.

The above should read: "The Ameraucana (correct spelling) will NOT have willow legs is pure bred." True Ameraucanas have slate-blue to black legs depending on the variety. Easter Eggers may have willow legs.

Also, for FirewifeJess, it sounds to me like you probably got your birds from a hatchery or feedstore (which get their birds from hatcheries) and therefore you would have Easter Eggers. I only breed and show the WBS variety so I can speak authoritatively but I think the Silver Ameraucana may have a bit of a "chipmunk" look to them. None of the others do as far as I know.

God Bless,

Ok this is to clear up what I posted wrong late one night as it has rubbed some people wrong.
I don't want to confuse anyone and I fixed where I did not catch the u before the a in spelling sorry again. I did not mean to hit it off so well with some. :(
Hope this clears the air and we can get back to the welsummers and hopefully forgive and forget.
Hope y'all have a great day and best wishes will all your breeds!

My corrections are as follows. Please note this is just leg color I did not add what the bottom of feet color should be-
Araucanas- black to dark willow on blks and blk breasted red ,gold and silver duckwing willow and white -yellow ( colors on legs)
Ameraucanas- slate to blk
Sorry for the mix up hope this clears it up. It is out of the 2010 asop book.

yes, back to the Welsummers, (btw I love that the spell check on here tries to correct that spelling) How do the rest of you feel about breeding the broody trait into the breed?

personally with our set up of pens- space would be an issue to have broodies, as none of our breeds are known for going broody. I'm not sure how that would work for us as we try and hatch at the begining of Jan so the kids can raise the chicks for fair and we try to get the hens back into feather condition so that they show good as well. I guess it is all a matter of personal perference and what works. Right now I have 3 Wellie girls who are molting and look bad!

My girl hasn't decided to stick with it yet. She got off the nest yesterday afternoon, but at dusk was back on it. She's not getting a thing to hatch until she shows she's dedicated.

I don't want my wellies going broody - I have barnevelders for that.
