The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My husband and I picked out some chicks today, the Welsummer being one of them. I was completely intrigued at the similarity in appearance between a Welsummer chick and a chipmunk. In fact, we named her Chipmunk. I'm typing this here to mark a place so it's easier for me to access this thread later. =]

I just recently (yesterday) hatched out 1 wellie among other breeds... I remember reading somewhere that you can generally sex them by looking at the V on their head or the "eyeliner" around their eyes... I'm really curious to find out what it is... any suggestions

You too will enjoy your Wellie!!

I know its hard to read this whole thread, but if you do a search within this thread for the word eyeliner, it should bring up some pictures of chicks for you to compare too. Generally, females have a longer streak of eyeliner and a very distinct V on the top of their head. Males will have more of a patch of darker brown on their head and no or little eye liner. This is not always true though, so don't rely on just that method for determining sex.

Last year I hatched 8 chicks form Kim's eggs and sexed them 100% successfully. Girls had very pronounced V's on the tops of there heads where the boys had 'smudgier' markings... Girls had very defined 'eyeliner'(striped behind the eyes), whereas the boys had minimal.
Good luck!

Wellie Girl...

Thanks, Jim!

I'll have chicks available in the Spring. At the moment, I have 5 orders to fill either this year before it gets too cold, or next Spring. And my girls are molting pretty hard (and I cull for this) so it's going to be a while before I can even fill my paid orders. I'm getting one, very dark egg per day at the moment from the one breeding pen. Paid orders gets you on the waiting list. And I do AI so eggs from my show hens are included in the batches I ship out.

I do ship started birds, but be prepared to spend around $100, at least, to get the bird to you.

Any other questions, feel free to message me here, or you can email me directly at tdusil at iowatelecom dot net.

Trish

Does anyone know of someone else who had day olds?

Thanks so much for posting the info about sexing chicks and the great photos. I have 7 eggs in the 'bator and so far 2 have actually hatched, hoping at least a couple more hatch too. Now when they dry off and fluff out I know what to look for! I won't rely on it 100% but use it to give me an idea of what I"ve got to make future plans ;=)
