The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Thank you for clearing that up, I have more wellies in the incubator hoping for girls this time around.

Are Welsummer Roos generally friendly?
I have 3 welsummer roos and all are friendly but I do have to watch them around small children. I just take it to mean they are protecting their girls. My 10 year old will argue that with me lol. He carries a stick with him when he enters the run now. Hasn't had to use it but said he rather be safe than sorry. None of them have tried attack him they just act like they want to. Overall I love mine and plan to keep welsummers from now on.

Depends on how old the roosters are and if they are trying to figure out their hormones still. If that's the case, I think the stick is a good idea. If they are over a year old you might want to process any aggressive roosters.
If your son isn't fearing the roosters there is no sense in making him fearful. IMO. I think that roosters are dangerous at some level, but i dont think they are going to severly injure a 10 year old. Of course, there are people who are going to completely say the opposite. Proceed with caution, but don't make your kid scared of them.

I am hoping for the same here. I have 3 roos, all that hatched out of a batch of 15 back in May. I am hoping that I get some girls from this batch of eggs I am get this week from a different breeder ( bwalden ).

Thanks bwalden for your help getting me the eggs this late in season.

Glad to help bigtom. I hope you get lots of girls. One thing about it with welsummers you can tell as soon as the feathers dry after your hatch. I hatched out some of my own a few weeks ago and all but one were girls. I was pleasantly suprised though.

My roos are right at a year old. They have not attacked him but they act differently around him than they do me. He isnt really scared of them but he says if they try anything funny he's gonna whack em. I get a kick out of watching him. He helps me feed and gather eggs every evening. I agree that an aggressive rooster can be dangerous to small children. I wouldnt tolerate any rooster attacking my kids. he would have to go.
