the Will They Hatch? thread

Hi,
Are you using one bulb or two? Do you use a fan? Also what are you using for a thermostat? Check all connections in the box for corrosion caused by humidity.

I am going to join this thread because I am wondering if "it" will hatch. Collecting eggs this morning picked up one of my marked eggs from under the broody by mistake. Oopsy!

Soooooooooooooooo-since I will not be back at the farm until later this afternoon I stuck it in the naked rats hammock bed to keep warm until I go back. If the hairless cat takes a long nap this afternoon I will set it under him since he is even warmer. I considered the oven but this seems more "natural"(?) So let's see if it will hatch-it is on day 8.

I am currently using one bulb and a fan and a water heater thermostat. the bulb is a 40 watt appliance bulb. I noticed last night when I checked the bulb that although they are both Slyvania bulbs they have a different contact spot in the base. One is all metal and slight rounded and the other has a small flat disk of metal surrounded by a black ring of something shiny. I did "clean" the base of the first one off. It was dull looking and placed it in the bator last night. I had previously did full three week hatches and shut the bator down for a day or two until starting up again. I have since built a hatcher, using the same bulb fixture and thermostat as the bator and computer fan as the bator, works fine so far, so that I can do stagged hatches. I have been ordering shipped eggs a dozen at a time to build up breeding stock. I am working on LF Blue Frizzle Cochins.

Me too. I had some eggs shipped put them in last sunday. The bax was not smashed near as badly as the OP's but it was smashed up. I had several detatched air cells and one that was cracked all the way round. I candled on day 7. Of the 11 only 5 are still going. The detached cells, none are going and the cracked egg started developing and then quit a couple days in. I am hoping the 5 will keep going....we shall see.

Well I know that eggs under my bg won't hatch now...

went out to check on the 2 pipped eggs and 1 chick I had placed under her, only to find: 1 of the pipped eggs got squashed(chick dead), the other still sound, and the already hatched chick... GONE. No trace of it anywhere... I feel so...

for putting them out there under her. Never again! and I brought the remaining pipped egg back in and put it back in the 'bator. Thankfully it seems to have had no harm done.
