The WORST bumble-foot, ever?

Just weaken the iodine (1) down with water (10) -betadine/iodine, at too high a concentration, disinfects while drying out otherwise healing tissue Almost sounds like feet/toes were beginning to `burn' from being in droppings too long. Our vet had our roo on 250mg Cephalexin (twice a day) for a month for `standard' pus swollen/pododermatitis (bumblefoot). Keep the guy on clean bedding and, if possible, post up a shot of the affected area of hock. Sounds like you're making progess.

However, I'm with onthespot: AI, only way to be sure.

Good luck!

I've been lurking on this thread, not having any experience w/ bumblefoot, but wanting to be prepaired in case. But I have questions for chookschick ................. The soaking in salt would epsom salt work? The medicated cotton ball "shoe" is that w/o needing to "remove the seed" as others talk about? If it is going to work how long before you know if this is working or you have to progress to more invasive means? Thanks.

I have had multiple cases with vet assistance, and what I was directed to do was cut a piece of 'swim noodle' or other firm foam into a shoe, leaving a hole where the 'seed' was in the foot in question. I have had that be a black scabby seed, I've had it be a hard nodule inside the 'ball' of the foot, I've had it be an infected underside of the nail, etc.

In several cases where it was the black scab and it was easily removed, I've just scraped it off, squeezed it until it was clean blood, and then I put cotton or gauze on it with ointment. It was the closed cases where there was no opening or scab that freaked me out the most. The vets said to make the 'shoe' or use cotton to support the rest of the foot and leave a hollow under the hard nodule. Wrapping it with betadine or ointment gives it the opportunity to heal any unseen scratches, etc. The support allows it to stop being irritated and swollen inside. The wrap gives it the opportunity to be cushioned enough to heal.

I don't remove anything anymore. I just wrap and wait. If it's bad because I missed it, I change it every other day. If it's not bad, I just wrap it with ointment, cushioning, vet wrap, and wait a week. I check each week. They miraculously go away. It's counter to any logic, but I think their body just manages better without the exposure to the world.

This is incredibly valuable to know - thanks ChooksChick!!

He's doing great. He's moving back outside tonight to the quarantine coop--DH was NOT happy when he got home to a rooster in the laundry room (even in a crate) and yes, DH is a DRAMA QUEEN!

After DH gets home tonight, I will unwrap and reassess the roo's leg and see what it's doing...he seems to be doing well though...still eating/drinking/crowing and dino-roaring.

Glad to hear he's feeling strong- I'm not one to allow any ongoing discomfort if I can help it, and if the seller didn't know, they ought to find this compelling enough to reassess their care regime. If they did know, they should be ashamed.

I too have been following this. My thoughts are how could the seller be unaware ? If she or she handled their birds it is something that should have been noticed. Even if he or she is still learning. If they didn't know their is always help and information to go to before taking that kind of money. I get a little annoyed sometimes with dishonest people. I had a neighbor and good friend get taken the other day because they sold them " amercaunas" but they showed me and I told them umm you got a Easter egger there. Then took over my amercauna over had showed them. They got ripped and the person they said had tons of chickens and should have known better. Makes me wonder if most people just take the money and run. Then another time a person was selling a horse as broke and for kids. I get on it since my neighbor doesn't ride and the bugger bucks me off the second I put my leg into it. That sucker was no broke , not broke to ride let alone this guy was selling and even had pictures of his small kid on it. He had the child sit on it for pictures but I tell ya that sucker was dangerous and sent me to the hospital via ambulance. I was knocked out and had a broken rib.
Ok rambling dishonest people make me mad.
