The Worst Predator Ever

I would call the local media also. Im sure this would generate some interest and incense alot of people. Im sure if this were a person the would be all over it, but because its an animal, why is it not such a big deal? Kids who hurt animals grow up to hurt people. If they are not made to face the consequences, the will just do something else but what they will learn is to be more careful not to be caught. Where will it end? With someones pet dog? Cat? Its no wonder animals dont trust people when you have kids like this running around thinking its fun to harm them, even if it was them putting a dog into the pen. The thought and effort behind it is disturbing. Im glad I dont have kids because Id probably go to jail by beating them to death for doing something this shameful and cruel. Of course, the beating would be after they paid back the damages.

I have no suggestions for you, earlier in my life I worked and lived in the Southern "bible belt" for three years. There is a segment of that population that grew up on Cockfighting, dogfights, and other blood sports. Its a cultural thing. Good fences make good neighbors and distance makes better neighbors. Daniel Boone was quoted: " Its time to move when you can see the smoke from the neighbors chimney"

I would go to court and recommend to the judge that these kids get counseling, such behavior is a sign of sociopathic behavior, whats next doing harm to children? peers? school shooting? Get a lawyer and prosicute the crap out of them!

i have a willow switch for those kids would you like to borrow it!

I have four boys and they would not even think of doing something like that?

I think you should go for there hides+ ! I would get some quotes on prices for replacement for everything and go to civil court with it.

Make sure you have lots of pictures of the damage and names of every bird you lost!!

My heart goes out to you and your family!

We will keep you in our prayers!

Blessings,
Jeremy

Sorry for your loss. We are just recovering from a dog attack on our first set of chicks. We are new to the chicken family. We live in a rural area in Alabama and have the perfect setting for it. My 8 year old son and I decided to build a coop and start off with 4 hen that would supply some eggs for the family. He really got excited about that. We went to a local breeder and got 4 of the most beautiful and healthy hens we have seen. After getting the routine down and learing what to do and not to do we decided to step out with 4 chicks. We raised them in the laundry room from day old until they had fully feathered out and they were ready for their new coop. Last week the neighbor's dog got into the coop and killed all four of the young hens. Although we had the coop secured the dog litterly ripped himself to shreds getting into the coop. Long story short the dog was relocated to another part of the county. My neighbor felt awlful aobut it and offered to pay any cost. Because he is older and on fixed income we decided that the best move was to make a good neighbor and not a profit.

As for your situation in Baldwin county I would also contact my local conservation officer and check out his/her view on the matter. Due the the efforts that the teen went through I would push or the intentional creulity of animals. I will be heading to Baldwin county next week and just cleaned out the coop here. I could drop off the teen a little present.

Keep us posted. I'm really interested in the outcome of this.

One that I suggest is that you try to get the judge and probation officer to make the kids work off the debt by rebuilding the coop and run then under your supervision care for the chickens themselves. If nothing else maybe this would teach them some form of responsibility.
If I would have done something like this when I was young there would have been a real good whooping that I'd still be feeling, too bad parents aren't doing this now

The local media is too busy hypeing the non-existant oil thats "everwhere" causing massive non-destruction of everything. Maybe if they were oil cleaning chickens that were on their way to clean up our pristine beaches..............
From personal experience I don't think you'll get anything out of this except a hard time for making those poor teens (who were only being teens after all!) lifes difficult. You'll be told that YOU are going to ruin those poor kids lives for just being teens. Mom and Dad (if there is one) will be indignant. ("How dare you!! My kid was just expressing himself! Its YOUR fault for putting those chickens there!!")
Baldwin county has more than its share of juvenile delinquents and every time one gets in trouble and they interview the parent, its always the same thing. "Its not my kids fault, the other kid made him shoot/stab/assault/rob/rape.......".

The parent/s should be tied down coated with peanut butter and let the surviving chickens "clean" them. I was going to add while the kids watch, but you'd have to take away their cell phone/I-Pod/game cube/ computer or other entertainment device. And that would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Very sad to read your post of intentional killing of the chickens. Shameful what some people will do,and the reaction of the parents is very disappointing. I don't think property is ever safe when you are not on the land...and even then these things can happen while you are living right there.

Hope you get some sort of resolution. I doubt anything would make me feel better about having that type of neighbor. Can only hope the teens will move away soon!

I just sent this to the sheriff.

Dear Sheriff:

It has come to my attention that you plan to not press charges and just "scare" some teenagers that thought is it was fun to throw a dog into a chicken coop and watch the "fun". I totally disagree with this approach.

If these children do not get scared in front of a judge and suffer true consequences, they will be the young men you are arresting in a few years for assault, battery, rape, and who knows what else because they were taught, by you, that the consequences of inflicting harm on another living being are not that bad. These soon to be young men need punishment and they need counseling. You are not doing yourself or these young men any favors by making light of this in any way.

The parents need to be looked into, as well. The boys did not get the attitude that such cruel behavior is appropriate out of thin air.

I very deeply hope that you will take the appropriate action and do right by the victims of this horrific act and these misguided youths.

Sincerely,
Lillian Becker

I hope this helps.

Have you thought about a civil suit? I get the impression that these folks are poor and making them poorer is not the answer. However, it is a huge bargaining chip toward getting people to do things you need them to do, like teach their kids to behave themselves.

So sorry that you had such a horrific experience. The kids committed a crime. Trespassing, destruction of property, animal cruelty. The sheriff should not be the one to decide in pressing charges. YOU are. Press charges, the kids need to be held responsible for their action. Giving them a 'scare' will not be enough for the crimes committed, regardless of their age. They planned and acted on their plans, they are old enough to suffer the consequences. Money is not the only or most important issue. The sheriff/community will send a message that 'it's OK' to break the law and harm people and animals if charges will not be filed. Work with the ASPCA/organization anyone that is willing to help and also publicize this. What will these kids do next? The parents apparently also have to learn that certain behaviors are not acceptable and that they yoo will be held responsible for the actions of their children
