The Worst Predator Ever

First of all, i offer my sincere condolences that this happened to you...

and then i must say this:
Any person who would do such a thing to your chickens/pets/property/reputation/pride/peace of mind needs to compensate for their horrific actions. May i also suggest that they need a friend; a child is a child, and if they have not recieved enough love/care/attention at home (and it is obvious in this situation that they havent), they will seek satisfaction elsewhere. You may not be an obvious candidate, but with the right going abouts, you can be that filler:::

I suggest that you make it clear to them how hurt, angry, and ashamed you are that they did this, not only to your beloved beautiful birds but also to the dog, then try to work something out so that they repair the damage and get to know you and your chickens(why you have them, what their names are, etc etc.) under safe circumstances and prefferably police observation. Try to be as kind to them as you can; it is not entirely their fault that they made this decision...after all, "the apple dont fall far from the tree". If you do this it will only help in the long run and will firmly teach them at least a little bit of something that they should have been taught as toddlers; respect, love for nature, and ways to have good clean fun! oh and work ethic! anyone with that kind of time on their hands needs to keep their hands busy with responsibility, video games, musical instruments, ANYTHING except for what theyve been doing!

I myself am a teen. I know, from seeing and hearing things that go on in my neighborhood and at school, that when they are not given proper discipline from those in authoritive power, it will make no difference to adolescents what is said because they will say "its all a joke" they will not take their actions seriously enough to become decent human beings at all.

One last suggestion: kindly ask an officer or counselor of some sort to read through all of your forum posts and the replies you have gotten regarding this incident: it will be concrete evidence that people from all over agree with you and will offer proof that weve got your back in this!!! Stay strong, keep cool, and have faith that you will get through this! Ill be pullin for you! and will stay posted.

I am so sorry for your loss and am further outraged at the behaviors of these boys as well as the lack of interest from their parents. I have taken Sherriff Mack's name and address and intend to write a letter of deep concern. I certainly hope many others here do the same. If the Sherriff is inundated with angry letters he might just change his tune about the Andy Taylor, "Just scare the boys," attitude. How frightful for your chickens.

You mentioned one of the kids was on probation? Well, he has broken his probation. He should now be punished for the original offense time/money he was charged with.

Sickening, just sickening.
So sorry you are going through this.
Here there would a huge public outcry, and those kids would spend some time behind bars.

Those horrid brats. They won't face any meaningful consequences now they are evil little monsters who are the kind of vermin who think its funny to set poor homeless people on fire. it wont happen but they should be eliminated from society before they breed more evil vermin like themselves. thats my opinion and i'm sticking to it.

This is what I have been thinking every snce I read this. Even a young kid knows that throwing a dog into a chicken pen would cause pain and fear . . .my 9 year old would be horrified to hear this story. I defintely think they need counseling. This is exactly the same path serial killers follow, and if there has been unexplained fires in the area, that is probably something else they need to be asked about. Starting fires and hurting animals are the two early signs of a sick mind. I am so sorry for yout loss, cannot imagine your horror when you saw that carnage. Hope your little birds are all better now.

If it had been one of my kids that had done this they'd be begging the Sheriff to take them away as it'd be much better than what awaited them at home. My boys screwed up once and it was a lesson that they never forgot. Note the use of the word once. These kids need to suffer repercussions other than a "scaring" by a Sheriff. But then again it is the south and the good ole boy network is alive and well there.

You are very kind to take some of these things into consideration. Not much hope for the kid who's parents don't care, the only thing you can do is go to small claims court for financial restitution. But if the grandfather can adequately supervise the boy re-building and daily watering and care of your remaining animals for a few months it might help the kid more in the long run. If it turns out well he could learn a sense of responsibility and respect it would benefit everyone more than court fines and costs.
