Does anyone know if raw tea leaves are okay for chickens to eat? I have been reading about RR and Rr males (concerning rose combs) and they said how caffeine increased fertility in RR males from about 70-75% or lower to 80-85%. I know apples have natural caffeine in them but I was also looking into other things. Obviously coffee does but I'm not sure it is safe for chickes to eat coffee beans and I am definitely not going to make them a cup each morning! Lol. Any info would be much appreciated!

I have no idea about tea leaves. But I saw a post by Fred's Hens about calcium intake in cock birds affecting fertility. The study showed that layer feed when fed to males is to high in calcium. The males that had the best fertility were fed 2% calcium. Check your feed bags. I feed 1.7% calcium to my cock birds and as of today have 100% fertility and we have had over 100 degree temps here at our farm for months straight. BUT, I do have to add my males are all Rr. So....

We have broody hens right now that just hatched out chicks in our 105 temps with no problem. All 17 eggs were fertile.

I don't know about tea leaves...I'm guessing it would be ok...maybe even mix some spent grounds in with their feed.

As for calcium, how would you feed cocked and hens separate? I don't have any laying yet, but I have been mixing layer feed with the grower...

I do not feed layer feed to anyone. I put out a bowl of oyster shell for the hens.

I feed all my birds 'rooster pellets' from southern states (says rockin' rooster on the bag). designed for growing out cockerels and meat birds, not for layers. then I just supply them with oyster shell and crushed egg shells from the eggs we eat. the hens pick what they need for the extra calcium.

I honestly have no clue. But maybe you could add a squirt of the Mio Energy water enhancer to their water? I use it all the time for myself so I could have just the right amount of caffeine without having to drink soda. ( I hate coffee ) I don't have a bottle on me to check ingredients but I think it's mostly just caffeine and b vitamins with flavoring.

For male fertility you can safely use herbs

Saw Palmetto

Ginsing

Tribulas(The plant)

If the bird is lacking in sex drive they need a different herb like Unicorn

I am lazy and just plant alfalfa, clover, annual rye, kale, turnips, mustard, red and white wheat, and grain grasses. I am going to try to grow a few plants I will have to cut and harvest next year to feed out during winter. I am not sure if I will cut them and harvest or not.

I might toss a few seeds in the garden and see how it goes this winter.
