Splash can't produce any Black chicks only blue or splash. Splash to black would be 100% blue.Isnt blue on splash 50 percent blue, 25 % black and 25% splash??
Quote: These are NOT culls. He is reducing his flock. He is not going to be selling chicks next year and these are from his breeding pens and he is just thinning them down since he is not going to be hatching as much next year.
I GOT AN EGG from her!I didn't expect any egg since she is molting![]()

Black x Black = 100% Black
Black x Blue = 50% blue & 50% black
Black x Splash = 100% blue
Blue x Blue = 50% blue, 25% black, 25% splash
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue & 50% splash
Splash x Splash = 100% Splash
I think that's right.
ETA: i think this is right too, thought it was worth adding.
Blue is Black with 1 dilution gene
Splash is Black with 2 dilution genes
Right. Splash has two copies of the blue gene. Because a splash bird has two copies of blue, any chick produced by that bird has to inherit one copy of the blue gene from the splash parent. Therefor, a splash bird can not produce a black chick. A blue bird has only one copy of blue, and one copy of black. So any chick produced by a blue bird has a 50% chance of inheriting the blue gene from the blue parent and a 50% chance of inheriting the black gene from the blue parent. Which is why when you breed a blue to a blue, you can get some black chicks because there is a 25% chance that the chick will inherit the black gene from both parents (also why you get some splash chicks...there is a 25% chance that the chick will inherit the blue gene from both parents). When you breed blue to splash, then 100% of the chicks will inherit the blue gene from the splash parent (hence no black chicks possible as each chick will get at least one copy of the dilution gene) and 50% will inherit the blue gene from the blue parent (making a splash chick) and 50% will inherit the black gene from the blue parent (making a blue chick).
