oh Steve, I am sorry. beat yourself for awhile (2 days is enuff) and then stop. Go get some new girls right away. I mean it.

Many, many of us have left coops open, forgotten water or food, left a sharp object lying around, or overlooked a sick or injured chicken (or other pet).
I hope coming on here an 'fessin up helps a bit, you're not alone. As long as we are human we're certainly not perfect. We try and try but we will make mistakes, hopefully different ones each time. I let my chickens get eaten TWICE and have forgotten to fill the feeder TWICE. I feel sick with guilt but just pick my courage up and keep on keepin' on. The name of my coop is Chicken Heaven because even though their human screws up on occasion they are very content little ladies and also very forgiving.

Everyone has done it....I'm so sorry. It's like the predators just lay in wait for us to slip up. I woke up to 22 dead chickens one morning......obviously we had to make some changes to our coop (we hadn't left the door open but thought it was safe).

I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep going with the chickens because it was so sad after losing them but my Roo survived and I knew he needed company, just as your girl will.

Glad you have one girl left, again I'm so sorry.

well put, with each mistake we make we learn something new...I am always learning the hard way. get some new friends and in time the pain will ease up

It happens, sadly, to just about all of us at one point or another. Keep them long enough and you may do it again. Your culprit is likely a raccoon. When given a group of birds to select from they generally kill them all and eat the heads to get at the brains. I wouldn't object so much to the darn things if they would just kill one! What a waste!

I had a ruckus a few years back at 3 am and went out with the Marlin 60 to see if I could sort it out. Isolated to one pen containing my best light Brahmas I stood in the door and looked with a flashlight to see what was up. They were quiet at this point and sitting on the perch but broken eggs were everywhere. I looked some more and then noticed the masked face sitting on the perch in the middle of the line of birds. A difficult and dangerous shot in the dark with open sights but I got him and missed the chickens.

You will live to raise a new flock. Lots of half grown chickens on the market that need homes....get on it!

Set a trap its more and likely a coon. Same thing happened to me. We not only had one coon, we trapped 6 and killed one. They will be back. Set that trap tonight.

Horrible! I hope you find the culprit.

Sorry for your loss

.It has happened to me too. I lost 9 little chicks last summer, the one time I didn't make sure everthing was closed. I know how bad you feel, but don't beat yourself up over it. Get some more chicks, it really will help you heal, and remember the predators are out there waiting.

I see I am not the only one. I am so sorry for all our losses. It is very hard mistake to swallow and it cost the life of my kids

What a sad bit of business.

I am so upset and mad at myself for falling asleep and just spacing out that late at night.

Well I am looking for companions for my little Blondie the only one left. I love her and going today to get her some pals to hang with.

My friend's son, age 13, takes care of all their pets meticulously but one night he forgot until just after dark to put the ducks up. They seemed fine when he went out to put them up, but the next morning they saw that one was badly mangled, and she had to be put down. She had clearly been in terrible pain throughout the night and there was honestly no hope for her. He felt absolutely terrible, but honestly, we all make mistakes. I've done the same thing and had to put a duck down due to a leg injury. And when I first had ducks, twice they were ravaged by a fox because I hadn't built their pen securely enough.

I'm sorry you're going through this, and very sorry for your loss. It's never easy to lose them.
