Our family, husband included, are very attached to our girls too. We are first time chicken owners as of March and raised our 10 girls from day old baby chicks. You get very attached to them, they are our babies and a very close part of the family. I dread this ever happening to ours, which it could as ours free range all day, and are alone quite alot. I can't imagine how much this must hurt. Lots of hugs to you and your family. Try to remember the good times you had with them and all the different personalities you all enjoyed. Maybe you could set up a memorial in a special place in your yard next to your coop to remember them. Don't grieve to long, they wouldn't want you to, they know how much you love them. Move forward with making sure they are secure and maybe invest in an automatic pop door open/closer and get some new girls.

You all have been so supportive and nice I can not thank you for your kind thoughts and nice wishes for my family. I thank you all very much. I am really touched by such a nice close community I have found. You are like my extended chicken family

Oh no! I am SO, SO SORRY! This is only my first year raising chickens. They are free range except at night. After they were accustomed to the coop, I let them out, but only while I was with them. They had been out on the farm for a couple of months and comfortable with their surroundings...I ran to the store for a few items and when I returned an hour or so later, a little more than half of my precious lovies were dead and the others were "lost". The ones that got away came back to roost late in the evening and my neighbor (country neighbor) brought back my Sunshine quite injured. He said his dog had her in his mouth. :-( I know how you feel. It was devastating. I cried and cried and blamed myself for weeks. I thought they'd be OK for a short while on their own. I never thought I could fall so in love with chickens, but I have.

Peace and Love to you and your wife during this time of lost.

Tracy

If you have an Android phone, check out a free app called "Sunset Reminder". Your phone will automatically remind you to check your chickens every night, and will automatically adjust to the changing day length.
