We have been getting eggs for a month or so and first let me say,,," It NEVER gets old for us"... My kids bring me eggs all day long it seems. It's always a race to see who can come back with "the egg".

Congrats on the first egg! My black australorp gave us our first egg yesterday . . . and our second today!!! It is like Christmas! The kids love it. Can't wait to check the coop tomorrow!

My hens started laying in July and I still spend my off days up there watching them lay. Some just sit on there forever and some hop right out. Congrats on the egg!!!

Yeah I think it's a pretty individual thing, One of mine lays on the nest for an hour prior to laying. Another squawks up the ramp, quite for 5 mins. the squawks on the way back down. Others lay for awhile after laying their "gift". Yes... I too LOVE

The kids got home from school (8 & 6 years), went running to the coop, grabbed up the egg, and ran screaming to the neighbors to show it off. Later both said they were so happy they almost cried. I called my mom, of course, and could have died when she said, "Seriously, it's just an egg!" WHATEVER! Only you out there in chickendom can understand.

Oh, and what is the protocol on eating said 1st egg?? My son thinks we should keep it forever...gross!

I think the time they spend on the nest varies with where they are in the laying cycle, too. Start ups always seem to take them a while.
