Bottom line- they stink, but the stink is easily managable and minimized. Also- and I'm not referring to anyone in particular, as I haven't read the entire thread, but people need to stop being so easily offended. If a stranger on the internet can hurt your feelings, maybe the internet isn't for you.

The initial set-up would be time consuming and possibly expensive, but wow would that be cool. They would really only need to move twice the length of the tractor/day, so if you have 10' long tractors, it would only have to move about 1 1/2 feet/hour, assuming a 12 hour cycle. Wow are the wheels in my head turning! I think I smell smoke. LOL

Im thinking . . . .


A starter motor, a battery, and a few parts from a bicycle,
Axle has a sprocket from a bike welded to it, runs thru the legs.
Platform attached to legs hold battery and motor mount.
Thumb switch on handle to run when you lift and activate.


Problem is . . .
Starter motors run pretty fast, gotta figure out the reduction and find a sprocket that will work.
But, I could probably weld another smaller sprocket to the shaft of the motor to slow it down . . .

I think air-filled wheelbarrow or ATV tires for better displacement.


I have all the parts, except for the correct-size sprocket.
Definately do-able!

However, I dunno how a person would go about getting a tractor to move on its own.

Even a couple of feet per hour translates to about +/-30 ft a day, thats alot.
I would think after a while, birds would be used to it . . . but chickens aint the brightest creatures!

Youd be hard pressed to find a motor strong enough AND slow enough(even with oversize sprockets, thats asking alot).
Definately wouldnt wanna use a gas-motor I wouldnt think, give all the chickens heartattacks.

There would need to be a way to turn it on and off- solar maybe?

I picture just a battery operated wheel-barrow type deal, pick up the one side and hit the switch with your thumb and ithe other side just motors along, you steer it and if you lose your grip the switch turns off.
Or, have 4 wheels and a "radioflyer" wagon type steering axle, just push the handle right or left while holding the switch.


Shoot, Im prolly gonna be up all night now, thinking about how I could get like 10 tractors all set up and runnin on GPS tracking all over my backyard.
