They're heeeeeeereeeee!

I talked with the people at MM and apparently the smaller banties do NOT do well especially when it's still cold out. While she didn't come right out and say so it sounded like the best bet is to wait until late May or June to ship the littlest. It helps too to only ship similar sized chicks together, to avoid trampling deaths. Adding chik start something similar is an even better idea. Ask also if they can add hot packs or something similar to help keep them warm.

I wish I had known to do those things. :(

all that is why i have decided to buy locally. i couldn't bear have a chick die when it seems healthy or even seeing it suffer. so I'm gonna drive an hour and get some, that would be better anyways. I'm so sorry for your loss!!

I'm sorry this is causing worry. I never dreamed that this would happen.

I made the mash too. Once they were running and eating on their own I really thought they were fine. I'm with y'all tho on the temp thing. AND if they KNOW it's harsh why didn't they offer the heat packs? Seriously, if it were my business I'd just add them anyway. I'd post that the more temp sensitive chicks would not be mailed without it and the fee would apply automatically. As a buyer and this being live animals I wouldn't have a problem with that.

I did to the chick start for their water. I don't know what the grow gel is. Sugar??

I may just have them resend when the weather is better.

Sorry u lost so many birds. The hatchery would have to refund me some more chicks once it warmed up. Also my local Tractor supply told me they can order pretty much anything I wanted and have them shipped to my house or the store maybe u can go that route next time.

I'd be a little wary of the heat packs. If you ship two birds, fine, but if you bring up 25 they should keep each other warm. I brought up Polish hens with the others, they did fine. Problem with a heat pack is where do the chicks go to get away from the heat.

Now the grow gel is a sort of natural digestive system boost. It gives the chicks the bacteria they need to get the digestive system going. It's bright green, sort of gritty. You only give it to them for the first day, once one finds it they'll all swarm to get it. Sort of like how adult hends freak out over cottage cheese, the chickies love the grow gel. I figure anything that works I'll try to give them the best chance at living.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your babies. I got 25 chicks from Ideal on Jan 27th ( 10 cornish, 10 barred rocks"added for free for extra warmth" and 5 Rhode Island Reds) and I only lost two. One red the first night and one Barred Rock on the second day. It was my first time ever ordering chicks when they passed I cried my eyes out so sad.( Hugs to you

The survivors are doing great! I mean lively as crickets just hopping around. Warms my heart to see that. I don't regret ordering them and depending on how tomorrow goes I may or may not order again. It's just really heartbreaking to have them just keeling over like that.

Next time I will call and order and ask the best time and way to ship. So, 21 out 33 for me.
