It feels like the government big and small is becoming so overly restrictive and I just found out how very few companies actually control our national food supply... I hate to sound like a conspiracy theory nut, but I can't help but use my God given senses and foreshadow whats coming next... I live in California where the laws and economy seem to show the accelorated demise of the Nation... If it happens here, it usually happens here first and then eventually gets around to the rest of you. Is anybody else thinking of leaving the country soon? I would rather be a heavily militarized housewife in costa rica on a self sustaining farm and fight off gangs as the foremost threat (and a small underefficient corrupt government) than deal with a widespread and uncomprimising corrupted and degenerative system that restricts what I can eat and grow and sell and make and earn... Is it just me? I'm not saying there is some shan-gri-la where everything will be perfect if I leave, but that there are some serious trade-offs I'm wiling to make in order to have more freedom in the ways I want my freedoms. Laws against keeping chickens is just a small part of the big picture here it seems.

I agree with you...
Everyday is seems like I read of some company or company's moving out of Cali...
Everything here is going down the tube...
Unemployment 12.4%
Cali ranks 48 out of 50 (50 being the worst) in traffic
Cost of living is ridiculous
State is going bankrupt
Highest fuel prices in almost the entire USA
SDGE, PGE and SCE have the highest electrical rates in the entire USA, and they're getting ready to go up big time...again!

It's not looking good.

We have seriously considered moving to another state, but family is here...so it's really hard. That and we both have good jobs, those aren't exactly falling off tree's anymore.

All I can say is hang in there...I'm afraid it's going to get worse before better...

BTW, we have 4x chickens and wanted more, but City regulations only permitted 4x...really stinks!

I think what ticked me off enough to write all that yesterday....I have lived in my city since infancy, moved away for a few years, but now own a house and have always planned on staying here... my husband and I take care of our place and our neighborhood is decent... and the day before yesterday sombody tagged my sidewalk right in front of my house! And there is all this tagging going on in my city...even in the old parts of town...like we are getting over-run with gangs faster than you can blink. I just couldn't believe that some gang member marked our house and our street as his territory. I immediately got out some gray primer and painted the sidewalk and it isn't visible anymore...but they will be back and they will probably be angry-especially if they saw me cover up their tag. feeling so helpless.

my city means so much to me, The laws here are fair and our cops are kind and considerate... I just hate to think that I'll have to leave just to protect my children and allow them to play in a neighborhood that is safe.

i agree with the comments regarding over restrictiveness; unfortunately, we (not literally we) bring it on ourselves. the few complainers have a much louder voice than the majority (squeaky wheel gets the oil) and the "concerned" city councilman is more than happy to come up with some new restrictive law in order to make a name for him/her self on how they have improved the quality of life for the citizens. a lot of the time, the person doing the complaining about supposed chicken noise or whatever has 2 or 3 large "guard" dogs that bark non stop every time a leaf blows by. even a couple blocks from my neighborhood, horses are allows (but no chickens although there may be a few rougue chickens). don't misunderstand, the horses cause no harm nor noise / smell problems (other than the big piles of manure when they are ridden off the owners property)

if the local, state, federal govt really want to write a new restrictive law, how a a law that restricts all new laws for the next 5 years (with an extension provision). wife and i are currently house hunting to move out of the city / HOA to a least a little freedom to do reasonable things on my own property. we are being very careful to read any ordinance, deed restrictions, and even talking to municipal officials and animal control personnel in the areas to ensure there will not be a problem with keeping a reasonable amount of chickens.

Welcome to what some of us have been fighting, screaming and warning about for over 30 years:/

We have been called gun nuts, war mongers, survivalist, wack jobs, conspiracy phobes, and worse. In the end, most of us just want to enjoy what we do or want to do and live free. Now we have no choice but to be as loud and outragous as those looking to dismiss our history and foundations in the name of civility and modern society. This is why it is so hard for many of us to compromise, we have seen our rights chipped away...bit by bit.

I live in California as well- and that whole gang thing really bothers me. I have lived here my whole life and remember when it was cleaner and freer....can't say safer cause I lived in the bay area-Lol! Anyway, we actually have the option to move out of the country to Asia- believe me I have thought of it many times. Every time I travel, the comparisons to some Asian cities to ours is embarrassing. The Airports are far more advanced and clean. I become very sad when I think of what has become of my country and my state.

It is time to stand up and say "enough". There have to be many more "fair-minded Americans" than people who want to destroy us! I think we have all been a part of the quiet majority for too long...paying our taxes, taking care of our own kids and animals and paying our bills! It is time to get involved and make a difference! I think the power of 1 person can be substantial. Don't give up and leave your town/city/state/country to the gangs and vandals! It is really aggravating to see how things have changed for the worse. Oh well, pray...continue to work hard and connect with your neighbors. Hoping you can stick it out and make a difference!

I have to second this... I live in Illinois and we are right behind California. Lately I've been thinking to myself... this is MY country not the government's. The whole point of our constitution was to declare that we the people are in charge and the LIMITED federal government is there to help and serve us... not the other way around. We should all be studying the documents our founding fathers left us...especially the constitution... we need to know and understand what they mean if we want to remain a free people... and be willing to fight for what is ours and not just roll over and play dead. We are moving quickly from a soft tyranny to an all out tyranny where the government will tell what to eat, what we can possess and eventually when we can breathe. We cannot give up... that isn't the answer. We had something unique... never before seen in the history of the world... a free, self governing nation under God where anything was possible.. I want my grandchildren to live free... not under governmental tyranny. we need to work together and pray without ceasing. Those of us who are already trying to be self sufficient will be able to help those around us... our homesteads and farms whether they are big or tiny can help stabilize our communities.
