Not everyone receiving government benefits is a freeloader. The system is very, very broken. If you make over the limit, by any amount, you lose the benefits for that entire month and in some areas you have to reapply, which can take a week or more.
We learned this the hard way when we ended up being over by $20. We lost all of our food money and our medical benefits. Kiddo got to keep his medical because he fell into another type of program. Good thing too, because he ended up with medical issues and lots of scripts.
I’ve worked with many people who were forced to call off work because they were going to be over that month. They were incredibly embarrassed.
The system is forcing learned helplessness. A tiered, flexible system vs. a rigid, line in the sand system would be much better. Most people I know now, and have known in the past, that are/were on government benefits would have rather had actual help instead of ending up trapped in a broken system that forces you to either be a leach, dishonest, or starved and homeless.
Remember, I said “not everyone”, not “ no one”. There are plenty of people that are freeloaders, but it’s not the majority.
