What does it mean if it makes the ‘refilling’ noise all by itself?

It usually means one of two things.

It could mean the rubber plug or stopper in the tank is not down, so the water flows constantly into the toilet bowl, and the tank is constantly trying to fill up again.

Or it means that rubber plug or stopper leaks a little bit, just a trickle, maybe so slowly that you don't hear it leaking into the toilet bowl: but after a while, the water level in the tank is low enough that the tank needs to fill back up. That's when you hear the toilet running for a while. Once the tank is full enough, the toilet stops running, and all is quiet again-- until enough has trickled out that the situation repeats.

I believe we've had this issue before. Something is loose in the top part. I believe it can be fixed by yourself.

Slow leak. It should be an easy fix. Probably just the little rubber seal inside the tank. The one that opens when you flush, then drops to seal the tank to let it refill.

When ours do that, it's because the flapper is leaking. Pull the top. The flapper is the, well, flapper at the bottom of the tank that is connected to the chain on the flush handle. Takes about 10 minutes to replace and adjust, and costs 8-10 dollars US at pretty much every big box hardware chain or mom and pop store.


Here, the hard water makes them get brittle and stop sealing, so I have to replace them every couple years. Odds are that if your toilets were all installed at the same time, they're all going to fail around the same time.

Thank you all! That appears to be the problem. When I pressed on the seal, the trickle stopped.

I’m not sure about replacing it since this is a dorm room and I don’t want to mess things up by accident. How do you stop the water while you’re replacing it??

For now I’ve left the lid off so I can adjust it manually.
