Think our first egg coming

Went out to feed the chickens in the outside pen and heard alot of noise coming from inside the coop. I figured a rooster was harrassing one of the hens as they recently started doing that.

I went inside the coop and found 1 hen inside the nest box digging her nest out and squawking up a storm.

I remember the sound from chickens i had years ago and know its egg related lol.

Shes either a whiting true blue or a whiting true green. Not sure which one but will probably find out soon. I will check up on her in a bit.

I have 20 birds that arrived as peeps june 11. No eggs yet. Also 12 are buff orphingtons and their combs are still small and yellow.

As a matter of fact the only birds who have red full combs are the whitings. 2 of them full and red and 2 of them grtting there. As for the others they dont look ready yet.

Anyhow how long after she makes all the noise and digs her nest out should we see an egg.

You can do the pelvic exam to see which other birds are at point of lay.

Wonderful news! When our chickens first were going to lay, they all started making odd grumbly low growls and their tone changed dramatically, then a few days later, EGGS. It sure is exciting once they start laying. But it was certainly a clear signal from them things were about to change!

I took the egg and poked a tiny nail in 1 end then used a toothpick to plunge out all the egg. It took about 30 mins to get it empty . It's now an empty shell and a decoration so we always remember our first egg in our new home in Tennessee.

Kinda funny and ironic the first egg kinda matches the new sage china cabinet.

Classic behavior for a newly laying pullet...
...the noise and especially the 'nest messing' are the surest signs that eggs are imminent.

I went out today no eggs. Its pouring hard in Tennessee today and they are all in the coop laying around. Im happy she decided to use the nest box. I had golf balls in there for weeks.

I hope the rest of the girls are as smart as she was and use the nest box
