THINK THE HEAT GOT TO HER

Well, she made it through the night, but not much has changed. I put her out in the run just to see what she'd do and she just stood there. She is very lethargic. She even closed her eyes a bit. I'm getting ready to see if she'll eat some scrambled egg.

I'm also going to call the vet today and see if I can get her an appt. for today. I just remembered that back in March my barred rock got somewhat lethargic and would stand in the run and sleep standing up occasionally. I let all of them out in the morning and by afternoon, she was dead.

THIS SUCKS!!! It makes me want to find homes for all my chickens. It's to stressful and sad!!!!!

Sorry to hear about your hen. I lost one to the heat yesterday too. The rest of my flock seems hot, but is managing it OK, and one hen must have been weak or not drunk enough water because she succumbed despite my trying to treat her. This is my BO flock which I have never lost a bird, except one that was eaten by a hawk when it was a chick. they have been exceedingly healthy and great chickens.

It might be something beyond your control, like speckled said. Dont give up on chickens though either way! Anytime you have something in life that brings you that much joy, there is always a bit of sadness too! Its a trade off.

I really hope your hcicken gets better. Just keep giving her the best supportive care you can. Fluids, food, proper temps..the vet most likely will not be abel to tell you to much more than that also. Although, they can do a fecal test to test for worms.

I just gave her some scrambled egg w/olive oil. She began to eat some immediately, but didn't eat a whole lot. While feeding her, I noticed this:

Here is Lovebug and the cage I have her in. Is this cage okay for her?

She seems to want to stay in the very back of it where it's darker.

Awww, thank you FloridaChickenChick for thinking of me too. I had lots of things I had to get done today, but because of Lovebugs condition, I'm staying with her. I'm hoping my sweet dad will help me out with the errands.

Because she's in the dog carrier and it's sort of small and dark, would that make her want to just lay around and not do much?

Maybe I'll send Dad to Petsmart to get two more dog carriers and bring my other two chickens inside today too!

Small, dark and quiet is good for her right now. Could very well be reproductive issues or could be heat stress or a combination of both, but I would think after water and a day in the house, if it was the heat, she'd be perkier.

Even Obelisk dug a hole halfway to China and stayed there for most of the day...And the heat doesn't usually bother her.

I think part of it might've been the softshelled egg too.

Hope Lovebug's feeling better today.
