Thinking of getting into quails any tips?

So my quail eggs are in lockdown unfortunately i had 3 fail to thrive i guess thats whats its called and 7 infertile. But 39 on in there so im hoping for at least 6 quail.

I also just got word from a place i bought chicken hatching eggs from that they will finally be sending me eggs i bought (3 different breeds) and im eyeing them golden giant quail still. So i think ill be buying 4 dozen golden giant quail eggs and incubating them with my chicken eggs (separate brooders tho). Now i just need to make sure i time it right so they all go into lockdown at the right time together.

My japanese quail started hatching sometime in the night as i woke up at almost 7am to find the first of what is now 15 as of typing this out. 1 chick decided to pip at the small end an 1ill admit i helped 1 as it pipped sometime last night but no movement help it a lil and it managed to kicked free but i think that one will unfortunately pass as he was quit a bit larger then his egg an his neck was twist up in a odd way.

But all is not doom and gloom 5 were placed in the brood as they were running over the others heads that just hatched. An i have called one Don Quixote they come out as soon as i put my hand down and they have their side kick who runs after them lol.

Oh and I just got my golden giant quail eggs today which is sooner then i expected in seeing how the seller said they only ship monday-thursday. So i guess a exception was my case and i got them early but they came in good shape and im happy fantastic seller

So 6 quail died in shell no shrink wrapping or anything just failed to thrive. 2 are very weak and i dont think those will make it, I did help those they pipped in the air sac but they started not to respond or move so i made a hole in the eggs.

Good news tho big chick small shell has made it he went in the brooder last night and they are all doing fine, thus far no deaths in the brooder and i believe i have 28 or 29 chicks in the brooder so fingers crossed!

Right so i am now the proud mother of 33 japanese quail chicks. Unfortunately 6 died in their shell but they looked like they just stopped growing at around a week and a half it sucks but it happens so out of 50 2 were cracked, 7 infertile and a total of 8 failed to thrive.

So about 84.6% hatch rate out of the 39 eggs that went in. Not bad fingers crossed i dont lose any.

Sadly 48 hrs after hatch one died they wandered out from under the electric hen and i assume they got cold and died which sucks as only the day before i caught one on the edge of death cuz they did the same thing luckily tho i put them in the incubator and a few hrs later they were up and running around and drinking water with chick multivit in it from a small saucer i tagged this one with some flexible blue bandage and no its not the one that died the following day.

However they are now nearing 2 weeks old and are starting to get their adult feathers in and i have noticed a majority have quite a few chest feathers coming through and im not going to lie im pretty worried as every single one looks like they have lots of black speckles on the chest feathers coming through.

So now im asking what are the odds that all 32 quail chicks are female? Cuz im seriously worried they are 😭

It is extremely unlikely that all 32 chicks are hens. The usual ratio is 50/50, so while you may end up with hatches that have more males or more females, the chances of all of them being hens are very, very low.

How big is your brooder? If I put my chicks into the big brooder, I will put a divider in there for the first two days to keep them from wandering away from the heat and dying. After that they are capable of finding the heat on their own.

I seriously hope im not in that low low chance area.

My brooder is 2ftx2ftx12in i kept their food and water close by so they did not wander to far from the heat i even had another heater to keep the room warm plus i insulated the box a bit with a blanket still left a hole for air etc. Ill see about the hubby making a divider tho as my next lot of quail are due the end of this month start of next.

Im just curious if it would be safe to mix day old or 2 day old quail chicks with 3-4 week old quail as someone told me they do it all the time but idk sounds kinda ify to me.

No, you can’t safely mix chicks with that big of a size difference, even with no aggression, the big ones can crush the littles by accident. Plus the babies need heat and the adults don’t. Sometimes adults will adopt and care for chicks, but don’t expect juveniles to do that. You can combine them with the adults at 4-5 weeks in most cases. At 3 weeks you could mix them with slightly older juveniles.

No, I wouldn't mix chicks with that age difference. There is just too much size difference.
