~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

Ok so I pulled my other duck egg. It was really blurry and smelled a little bad. I have a problem with the one left. My kiddo bumped the bator and the egg got cracked. It's cracked over the air cell. I can still see the duckling moving inside. I don't have any super glue. The crack is just spider webbed and doesn't go into the air cell. Should I leave it alone or I was thinking about putting a thin coat of clear nail polish over it. I don't want to hurt the duckling though! Suggestions?

Clear nail polish or saran wrap

Any color nail polish works but light colors are easiest to candle through.

I HAVE A VISIBLE TURKEY EMBRYO!!!

These are due on the 15th. I bought some of Arielle's mixed eggs to give Penelope: put three in the bator for observation purposes and one has a lil' wiggley!!!

I also managed to break several if the chicken eggs by trying to stack in the Brinsea, so now 22 are chugging away and one has a smear but is still in there.

so I just performed my very first eggtopsy. the egg was beginning to SMELL like gym shoes, dead hermit crabs, and sulfer as my younger sister put it. had my dad smell it, "yep, its dead alright" it had feathers, and it was blonde. I was so sad. the beak was super soft and bendable. the feet didn't have scales, and a little of the gut was drawn. im guessing a day 15 death. today is day 18-19 so yeah. my mom asked u sure it was dead? I said I don't know, but I guess if it smelled it was.......  ~ now marshie is sitting on only 2 eggs. do you think its okay if she only has 2 under her when she originally had three? should I put a gold ball under her in the morning to fill the empty space?

As long as there's even 1 egg under her she will keep sitting.

awesome! thanks! I just realized this just posted. I typed it last night.....LOL day 19!

I believe I have a internal pip.....there is a quarter sized object moving inside the air cell.....what exactly is this? an internal pip? if so ON DAY 19?!?!? what is the earliest this could hatch? I need to know so I can move marshie to her broody coop!

If ou paint it with polish or put saran on it, the air cannot exchange like it should. I would leave it alone and wait and see. You can try what ever idea appeals to you--

Good analogies!! lol

Great opportunity to learn about an embyo-- the proteins of the beak stay soft beecause of the water content. Think about your fingernails after doing the dishes-- hopefully you do help out inthe kitchen . . .

If it's pipped internally, you have 2 options:
1. Leave her where she is until it hatches, then move her.
2. Very carefully move her now & try to keep her sitting on the eggs while you do.

She'll have babies very soon either way.

I thought the embryo was pretty cool! my mom told me before I dropped it to open it I may never eat an egg again.....but relly the baby didn't phase me. I find dead gross things to be cool....especially when it has to do with the growth and development of my favorite animal....its just life. things live and things die.....it just died a bit early which is too bad.
yes I do the dishes

ok thanks!

I just have her in the coop......there is two other hens and a rooster that she lives with. I don't relly want to move her because I cant guarantee she will keep sitting.

I think I will block the entry of the coop off until both hatch that way my rooster and hens cant get too curious. I have had a broody hatch and almost kill her babies so another hen couldn't get to them.

then my other 2 hens and rooster can sleep outside for the night.....it wont hurt them. they used to always do it when they were chicks and couldn't get up to the coop part.

what do you think?

Mine never even need one egg - when they're broody, they'll sit on air

Since moving broodies can be really risky, I wouldn't try to move a broody hen when one of the eggs is internally pipped. In all likelihood she will immediately get off the nest and pace, looking for a way back to her original nest. Once the chicks have hatched, a hen will happily move anywhere, but as broodies, I've had limited success moving them.
