~*Third Annual Cinco de Mayo Turkey Hatch-Athon*~ all poultry welcome!

@SilkieSensation

So, you think from the pictures that those are ooze spots?

I guess I am just super hoping that I am wrong, but at the same time, I do NOT want to risk my other eggs!

Should I toss all of the eggs from that shipment? More than half have at least some spots..... And that makes me panic.

Like I said, only one had clear veins.

I personally would toss the ones with definite ooze spots. I usually shove them off to 1 side of my bator away from the rest of the eggs for a day or 2 if I am not sure. That way, if they are leaking it won't get on the other eggs. With oozing eggs, they only get worse, so if you scrape off the questionable spots they will reappear by tomorrow & that will tell you for sure they are leaking. Just be careful scraping the ooze off. They don't usually explode when they are like that, but they are leaking because they are porous so it means the shells are kinda thin.

I wouldn't pull any yet if I'm not sure of them & would definitely leave any showing veining.

Quote: YEs, my buckyeyes are a heritage line breed and selected for good growth as a meat bird. I trust the breeder and will follow his recommendations. He picked up some of his birds from 'someone" and finished raising them. He said the difference in size was noteable--kept only a couple of those birds. The difference between 20-22 % and 27%+. ( My birds go back to Urch and ALBC line via Don Schrider. )

OH, maybe I am remembering one of your posts from the other thread!! How do you manage shipped eggs????

i'm so nervious about this hatch i missed a turning by over 4 hours yesterday when my grandma's mower wouldn't start and to boot the temp was 106f in the bator when i did get around to turn to them. I think this hatch is done for i'll still turn the egg's but i'm going to go buy some chicks. i should have just payed the stuipd shipping and got the live chicks in the mail. this hatch is starting to give me grey hairs
I miss turning sometimes when I am too tired at the end of a long day. I just tip the incubator for a miinute to let the eggs know they were moved!!

Quote: Definitely the length of time is the key-- one batch hit 110, must have been for a very short time as all was well.

that always bugs the crap out of me.. it's fine to let their little monsters run rampant.. but heaven forbid you let your dogs do the same...

I'll stick with animals.. at least I can trust them to act like animals... which .. most of the time.. is better behaved than most people!

I had a preschool teacher tell me how well behaved my boy was---- I couldnt figure out why she felt the need to tell me that . . . . . years later I worked as a substitute aid . . . . kids with no manners!! Yikes.

I don't spank, no need. Figured if I can teach my rotties good manners and to obey commands, then I can teach my kids without spanking too. I really do have good kids. When they liew-- I know it!!! ANd I call them on it--- dont lie ot me: if you get in trouble at school I won't be able to help you. Then watch his eyes get a little bigger . . . .

No worries then. We'll have you up to 4 bators in NO TIME! :gig

These are the same little monsters who covered my puppy in ketchup & tried to drown her in their pool...but they hadn't been out of the house all day. Pretty funny when I found the ketchup bottle between their garage & my coop & my pup's collar beside their pool. The cops didn't buy mom's story any more than I did & had children's services over there the next day.
my forst hatch was 11 so i jumped pretty quick lol
I'm working on establishing 5 flocks to star breeding. One is proving hard to find even 1 of let alone a breeding pair/ trio. I'm sure i will have at least a cabinet vator full in no time.

I have a newb question. I have an egg that looks like it has no air cell. When I move it I can see the liquid inside moving around into where there was an air cell. It appears that the egg started to develop but it's several days behind. Should I leave it or pull it?

Sold one of my last BR males from last years ahtch-- he was heavy!! A young woman bought him to go with the 2 girls she purchase from me 2 years ago. HE was a good boy as he sat i my lap while we waited for his ride to arrive-- he eventually started cooing and I was glad that he has a permanent homw as he was destined to be stew here. Glad to have one less mouth to feed and I sure hope he works out for her!

Hold it up to your nose and see if it smells bad. The only time I've seen that - dark with no air cell - the eggs were filled with bacteria and were stink bombs waiting a chance to go off.

It doesn't smell like anything. I've noticed a strange smell in my LG but I think it's the heating element. It's not a bad smell but one I've never encountered before. I have about 3 eggs I'm watching to see what they're doing. One looks just cloudy and another has a definite little embryo but very little veining. I think the cloudy one needs to go but I'm not sure about the ones with little guys inside. :/ I don't want to take away any chance of survival but they're really far behind my others that are moving.
