This chicken is not dead

He set in the box with her quite a bit today. I'm worn out from breaking all these bantam broodies. I hate that Hattie can't raise babies. I know she'd be a good mom.
I do not want to take a chance on more chicks though. I've lost too many in the last few years.
From Marek’s?
I too have Marek’s in my flock and have a committed broody. Stays broody for 6 weeks and goes broody every 4 weeks.
I am thinking of seeing if she will adopt vaccinated chicks. They will have to be a few days old for the vaccine to take, and if she rejects them I will raise them, but I am hoping it will be a way for me to expand the flock and give her the chance to be a Mom which she so desperately wants!

Any idea why you lost too many?
Mereks disease. I have 3 types of mereks. About 3 years ago, I adopted 3 little hens for my frizzle cochin boy. They showed no symptoms of any illness and after a few weeks they were allowed to range with the rest of the flock. A few weeks after that they hatched some chicks. Then the chicks started dying as did several of my juvenile chicks.

They are supposed to be 7 to 10 days old before being introduced. I've had a hen in the past take a 5 day old chick. I hope it works for you.
I'm sick of the heartbreak of having them die so I'm just going to let my flocks live until they die and that's it for me.
There are different types of Mereks, some worse than others, so maybe you'll have good luck. Do you know what type your's have?
