Hi.
This guy is Little Jerry. We just got him from a friend. They found him as a chick over the summer walking around by an animal shelter. Does anyone know what breed he is? I was thinking maybe a Rhode Island Red. He is our first rooster, we currently have him separated from our 13 free ranging hens. Any tips for raising a rooster?

He's an Easter egger/Rhode Island red cross and he looks healthy and ready to meet some hens.

Expect some fighting to occur when he does meet the ladies. He will want to mate immediately and they may not want to let him until he has proven his fitness and strength. And the way that happens is for the rooster to fight and defeat the hens. So don't be alarmed if it happens but keep your eyes open and watch that the fighting doesn't go too far. In the best case scenario it will all be over quickly but if it isn't you may need to separate him again if the hens gang up on him.

Also keep your eyes open for aggressive behavior towards humans. If he's a bit skittish and keeps his distance from people, that is a good sign. If he starts attacking people he will probably need to go, especially if there are children around.

That's a good sign, then. Do you know how old he is?

She said they found them as a chick by the animal shelter over the summer. I don’t know what her definition of chick is. So all I can really say is that he is under a year and he started crowing within the last month.
