who did you find that pays that much? I work with alpacas and yes, they are valuable, but not that valuable in today's market. Not an unproven male from a no name farm....

well I guess if you take into account the cost of the Alpaca,( I know around here males go for a lot )... and the cost of fiber they lost over the animals estimated lifetime, then the offspring they could have gotten from breeding him, the time and cost of raising him to that point in his life etc..... then it could add up fast..... even if it wasn't high Q.

According to the article, only Masterpiece was taken. I read it incorrectly at first and thought the other three were taken also, but I reread and saw they were just saying he lived with three others, not that they were taken.

People don't make much sense, do they? What a horrible thing to do.

.. I see pet ones go for $500 and up, well most of the time that's a male llama... Alpacas can start out at $1000 even as pets..... You can buy them cheap sometimes at auction , but most advertised are $$$$$

OMG! You need to visit OHIO

We have them go through auction rings for $25

They got an alpaca farm right near my college, the owner is actually a teacher there and is one of my wife's professors. His best Alpaca is with 1/2 a mil, and is a stud.

I don't see what's so great about them honestly though... I just see another animal.

Even just another animal shouldn't suffer such abuse. I don't think that was your implication, but I have to admit I'm not entirely certain.
