This is what a raccoon can do to wire

I THINK this thread might be moved to "Predators and Pests"

A N Y W A Y , I'm SSSOOOOOO GGGLLLAAADDD that my next door neighbor hates coons even more than me!!

He shot 2 juvenile coons last weekend that had been ripping up his crawlspace. He HAS had a family of coons living in his attic, where they came downstairs one night and untied the metal on his suspended ceiling. Farmers have had their good dogs drowned by raccoons.

I say, Arm all chicken owners, so that we can decrease the surplus population, (instead of sending them to 'Dicken's poor-houses')

...a little bit of 19th century British literary humour...

Seems to me there is only so far a person can go to protect their chickens. If they really want in they'll find a way don't ya think? These posts just scare the daylights out of me and make me regret getting chickens. If I told my wife I changed my mind about getting chickens and sold them all she would have a fit, what with all the money I've spent. Thanks alot!
These posts really !@#$%^ me off. Now I won't sleep tonight. I wake up and worry and go out in the middle of the night just check on my birds already!

Wow, this is scary. I have dogs- no chix yet- but it almost makes me afraid to get them. I hate to think that the chickens will attract these kinds of predators. I will be afraid to let my dogs out at night for fear of what they might meet up with near the coop.

Will an electric wire help? How many & how high? Do you think that will keep them from trying? Or will they always be skulking around out there?

I met a chicken breeder who lives only a few miles from me who said that he has bobcats! taking his birds. Can one get a LGD (Anatolian or Maremma?) for chickens??

If I had known about this site before I got chickens I never would have gotten them. I also think when the ones I got go I won't be replacing them. Thanks folks!

Cindy (who just watched the news report about a Bobcat living in some neighborhood in Melbourne (FL)!killing cats.

That is why when a raccoon is trapped it should be put down and not dropped off miles away to become someone else's problem.
