Only 45? That's not bad at all. I peaked at 107 a few years ago and it would've been much more if I didn't lose so many birds to the <bleeping> mongoose and thefts. Chicken farming in Africa has it's challenges

See, now you can tell conan to be quiet and go get more chickens when she calls me a hoarder. I don't think she has even 10 chickens.
I downsized a lot last year. I think I only had 16 chickens over the winter, shockingly. I would have had more, but I lost my best breeding male before I got the chance to hatch like crazy.

Now you all, I should probably mention that I had/have another very much planned incubation starting next week (hopefully!!) I've ordered and am waiting for some Andalusian eggs from a breeder, who'd been collecting eggs for me. He told me he "might" ship them tomorrow or Tuesday. I'm hoping they'll come soon, so I can try and align the lockdown and hatch dates for these guys

Theft? Oh my.

Yep... I lost about 15 hens to theft. Which is sadly not usual for South Africa. Frustrating for me though, after driving 300 miles (one way) to Cape Town to collect them and paying a fortune for them!

I’m hatching 2 Pekin duck eggs and they are due in 14 days at about 4:00 today

So happy for you! I just purchased one Swedish blue and one silver appleyard as well

Mine's due... in 27 days or thereabouts.
