They are not racist. THey just done like outsiders period. Mountain people od all appalachians states are set on their way of life. they just want to be left alone and live their life. In many ways like chicken owners, just let us have our chickens and we are the happiest people, but if you mess with our chickens we can get very angry. BTW the creepiest state i went through was Arkansas we came from Memphis rolling through towards Florida. THe first 2-3 miles went went into Arkansas i saw two ATV driving down the SR, a guy peeing in the bushes and two more guys noodling for catfish. I thought get me out that Hill billy hell. Scariest black moment for me was when our GPS thought it would be funny to take us through the hood in Memphis, my husband had a revolver loaded with shotgun shells ready. We were the ONLY white people and we saw people dealing and shooting up.

Conny, that's us hillbillies all right. We're not racist; we hate everyone the same. Don't you know that's why all WVians are inbred, coz we don't take kindly to strangers.

I'm not sure. It was a unit on when Lincoln was president and didn't want slavery. He didn't want to punish the confederates, the northerners were upset about that, umm something in there about some of the freed or escaped slaves went to the west, Lincoln was assinated.. I have to look at my notes. I'm thinking Tennesee and near states?
Alabama? I think of Tennesee because of the movie The Blind Side.

for me it usually doesnt take long to warm up and talk with them. I tell them though i am not american i grew with much of the same life. There were 63 people, 1 road through, no stop sign, no other races and three TV channels where i grew up. The next store was 10miles away. We raised cattle, pigs chicken...... we played outside and helped each other when help was needed.

You sound like Ken. He says that all the time.

Creepiest place I have ever been was Shreveport, LA *shudder*

lol my husband and I have been married for 16 years. He is still a "stranger" Our girls, on the other hand, they were accepted the first time they visited because "they're blood"

Once you are accepted, then you will never find a group more willing to step up, do what is needed and give you the shirt off their back or split their last bite of food. Not that they are "mean" to strangers, really. There is just a distance there that you can almost see.

this movie scene has been running through my head all day..

Yes, when I lived in FL there was segregation, though it was 'flipped'. If you were a migrant (Hispanic) farm worker your children could go to daycare for free, if you were white and hard-working (often making half what the migrants made), not only did you have to pay full price, but your kids couldn't even go to most of the 'migrant worker' daycares.

I used to work in a "migrant worker" headstart program. No way would I send my child there. Leaky roof, moldy walls, later found out there was asbestos in the ceiling. The building had been a school, shut down in the 70s (?) and then bought by a farmer. Funny enough, he housed chickens there for a while in one of the empty classrooms. Then it was leased by the government and 3 of the classrooms were used by the Migrant Headstart Program.

There are also a lot of free daycare/headstart programs available for "white" kids. I know because both of my children went to them. In 2 different states.

sounds familiar. On top of everything while I had to drive him to school everyday, other kids who where closer got bussed. And nevermind the fact that german/english bilingual isnt considered bilingual in Florida.

A few month later in the fall my son went off to regular pre K. There they had a nice mix of white/black/latino/arab/asian/lebanese.

The only 'free' daycare program where I lived was for the migrant workers. Sure, they had programs to help with the cost of childcare, but it was cheaper for me to find my own sitter for what I'd have had to pay to drive my kid 30 miles out of my way to get the assistance. This daycare was in a brand-new building, so I know it wasn't run-down.

Then of course there were the free education programs for the migrant workers (parents)....know any white people who can get free education without needing to show proof of income?
