This place is awful

Last March I got three Cornish Xs from my neighbors, who had them left over from a kids' chick hatching project. At first I said NO, but my DS said "please Mom" enough times that I finally gave in.

One year later, we have a total of 10 hens, 3 roos, and 20-ish chicks from the feed store. Plus, our little Silkie girl went broody and has just hatched 2 chicks, and is sitting on one more. If you'd asked me a year ago whether I'd increase my beak count times twelve, in more than ten different breeds, I'd have asked for some of whatever you're smoking -- but here I am.

The funniest part is that both my DS and DH have done complete 180s. DS now could not be less interested in the chickens he wanted so badly last year, and gave me a funny look when I told him I was getting more chicks. DH, who didn't care much either way, now does both morning and evening chicken duty, and I can't drag him away from the new hatchlings. My farm and garden blog has become All Chickens, All The Time.

What IS it with chickens?

I am scared to start with the incubator. I bought one and put it on the top shelf for when I need it. But I am afraid that once I start with it, I will have it full with eggs all the time. I am holding off on incubating so I don't get over run with chicks.

I keep making little comments about the silkies I could get. But with whatever I say DH doesn't comment back.

I must say I just did the same thing.

I went to the feed store to get some scratch and crumbles and right in the walk way - OH, NO the baby chicks.

Needless to say, not only did I get the feed, I walked out with 15 babies. I brought them home and stuck them in with the others and they look like they belong.

There where 5 Amerauacana's in with the FRY PAN SPECIAL for $1.19, 3 in with the ASSORTED Rainbow layers for $2.59. Then I grab 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte pullets and 4 Black Australorp pullets. Not only that, I have 30 that will be hatching up to the 13th and do not know yet how many of the Blue Andalusians will hatch come the 18th. Then my Jersey Giants and my Indian Game Birds are being shipped to me on the 8th. I better start making room I guess - GET TO WORK and off this computer.

Well I have already spread it to 3, they have been hatching out my eggs left and right and next year they can hatch out their own. They had a few (12 to 24) but with our coyote problems they lost all of theirs. I will have to work on another neighbor, so we are not alone.
