this years edible addition to the farm

I read about this somwhere out near Quartzsite or Blythe, never saw them though . . . I do wonder if they are still out there???

There were camels here in Dayton NV where I live that used to be army camels. There is a Historic Marker about it in the old town. I don't think any survived in the wild, but there is a ranch out here that raises them for the annual Camel Races in Virginia City.

Tehehe, just a few million of the big hairy beasties running loose over here.

I could send you some, the camels are free but the postage would be a bit steep.

I would love to raise rabbits here since someone complains about 'too much chicken' but he doesn't want anymore 'pets'.

LOL! I'd like to try quail that didn't have jelly/flabby skin. There's something about crisp skin. My first quail eating experience was not as delicious as bacon wrapped gouda stuffed sounds!

we ate wild quail when I was young, we just skinned them. they were the best thing going. but bacon (think I'll use pancetta) wrapped gouda stuffed, I may have to raise mor than I planned!

So what's the verdict? I would love to raise some quail... it's been a few years.

So which breed of quail and why?

I'm assuming quail because I get this feeling you're leaning that way!

Katy : Have you decided on a quail variety yet ???. My choice seeing is we are meat bird folks would be the Butler Bobwhites, they are huge and grow fast with the hen's laying fertile eggs in a short time. Texas A&M Whites are also a good choice if you can get them from a reputable source maintianing the original genetics. I rased quail for a few years and I was so impressed with how prolific they were, laying ferile eggs withing 5-6 wks seemed crazy cool.

Coturnix because they are easy to handle, mature quickly and lay eggs like mad. You will need an incubator to make more since their brooding instinct is mostly gone. I say mostly because I did have one go broody last year. She hatched 3 chicks but only one made it. I've tried to get her to set another next this year and so far she has shown no interest.

We used to sing this at girl scout camp. I found the lyrics at http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/h/hijollythecameldriver.shtml, where there is also a historical note about Hi Jolly and US camels:

Hi Jolly was a camel driver, long time ago
He followed Mr. Beale way out west
Didn't mind the burning sand in that God-forsaken land
But he didn't mind the pretty gals the best

[chorus]
Hi Jolly, hey Jolly, twenty miles a day, by golly
Twenty more before the morning light
Hi Jolly, hey, I gotta get on my way
I told my gal I'd be home Sunday night

There's pretty girls in Albuquerque, 'least that's what I've heard
There's pretty gals in Tumcumcari too
Now honey, I ain't blind, but I don't pay them any mind
'Cause I'm savin' all my lovin' just for you
[
Old timers down in Arizona tell you that it's true
That you can see Hi Jolly's ghost a-ridin' still
When the desert moon is bright, he comes ridin' into sight
Drivin' four and twenty camels over the hill
