I read that can and happen when they get old? even chicken hens have been known to take on the roll of roosters when their isn't one in the flock and crow, grow hackles if i remember right.

When a hen becomes so old they and stop laying they try to be a rooster or the dominant hen will crow like a rooster. I've witnessed that with my one hen Hedwig which died three weeks ago. I remeber reading because you have to research your bird for fair and the list of websites my 4-H instructor recomended said Indian Runners are one of the only ducks that don't require water to breed. If I find the website I will link it to you.

Sorry ya lost your hen

I have had ducks for 40 years and i tell ya what , they ain't playing leap frog out there in the pasture.
I do think the hens like being darn near drowned , especial the Muscovy girls.

Old female chickens, ducks, peafowl, etc. don't "decide" to become "male-like". Their change in appearance and behavior is the result of a change in hormone balance -- decrease in estrogen and increase in testosterone -- that occurs when ovaries shut down. There is no "trying to be like a rooster" involved.

Sorry for your loss...

Regarding the mis-information
  • My Pekings, Roens, Runners and Muscovies breed on dry land as well as in the water. The website you read is *wrong*, period.
  • Hens of *any* age can and do crow sometimes, heck, I've had hens with chicks crow.

Again, I don't mean to be rude, but you really should get your facts straight.
