Thoughts on Universal healthcare

A country can be judged on how well it takes care of it's most vulnerable citizens.

Yes there are people that scam the system, but how many of you would really turn your back on a sick child in need, just to stop others from taking advantage of the system? Would you rather these children die than have a small percent of the govt taxes wasted? Think long and hard about that before you say yes.

We must protect and care for all of our country's children, as they did not chose the life they have, and should not pay for the sins of the parents.

They are our future and one day your life may well be in the hands of one of this unfortunates.

I do not know if Universal Health Care is the awnser. But I do know the system we have now is failing for many in dire need.

Good thoughts for all us, no matter what side of the fence we fall on!

You could just put a sign on your front door saying you are happy to pay for the healthcare of low income parents and start handing out cash. Of course, it is easier to use the force and power of gvmnt to make other people do it. And govmnt will squander much of the money they get for this purpose.

No, they are not forced to ignore their healthcare by any means whatsoever in this country. They can walk into ANY hospital ANYWHERE in ANY STATE of the Union and get FREE MEDICAL at any time. Its the law and its posted in every ER and at every door of every hospital I've ever been in.

Responsibility for ones health starts with ones self as well. As Wifezilla said, someone with diabetes that takes care of themselves and still struggles should not be the same as someone who chooses NOT to make a lifestyle change that is required of them medically in order to improve their life.

Really, than how come two years ago a little boy in Florida died because of a rotten tooth??

Parents made minimum wage, but could not afford $80 for the dentist, and no dentist would take the medicare card. This was big news at the time because social services tried to get them help, and failed. In the end this little boy ended up with a high fever, an infection in his brain, and died quickly.

I do NOT believe everyone, everywhere in the USA can get medical attention, especially in the case of severe and sudden illness, unless they are rich.

but its not the gov'ts money...its the citizens money - its our money that pays for every single program out there.

and to answer your question.. no.. no child or person should be turned away for medical - and they arent - go to a hospital if your child or you are sick, they cannot deny you treatment, its against the law. There are also free clinics that will treat as well. There are more programs out there to help those that qualify for state aid or if they do not qualify, then there are other programs that are tailored for those that "just meet the threshold" than there are for those of us that barely make ends meet, are not living outside of our means, but can barely afford our own healthcare and medications as well - there are no programs for us however. We must make do with what we have and there is no one to help us. Its a double edged sword -people think because those that have insurance have the best insurance plans - but what they fail to realize is what we pay out of pocket monthly for our medications and copays or deductibles or what we too, go without because we cannot afford our own doctors even with insurance.

My medications that I must take every month amount to nearly $500.00 out of my own pocket and that is just my copayments. I'm grateful insurance covers what they do, but trust me... after paying $150.00 per member of our household in med deductibles, plus another $300.00 per member of medical deductibles - and all of it due at once... yeah.. we dont have much left either.

Ok, I don't have health insurance, my sister does.

When we traveled 2 years ago my mother called Blue Cross Blue Shield to make sure my sisters would be covered if there was an emergency, they said yes and gave us a number to call collect in an emergency.

My sister got sick and wanted to go to the doctor in Ireland, we were on a tour and couldn't stay more than a day, but were always told, "the doctor will be in tommorow it'll be 50 Euros (about $75 give or take) to see him (they don't take our insurance)."

We couldn't do it. When we got to London we had a week break and I took her to the emergency room, it took a whopping 5 minutes to get in. You know how long it took me to get into the emergency room with chest pains in the United States? 9 hours!

When I finally did get in, I was told that I was too young to be having a heart attack, go home and take some Motrin and come back tommorow if I still have the pain. Cost me $800.

My sister, in London, they wouldn't let her leave until the doctor said she could! Big difference.

In a report released last year, America ranked LAST in preventable deaths among industrialized countries. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080108082944.htm

That's
sad.

I don't like all these health plans that have all these exclusions, etc. Who knows what kind of illness you'll get later on down the road, why exclude it!

BTW, when we got back to the states, my sister's healthcare provider tried saying "we don't cover overseas illness." Which was obvious crap, since they gave us the number before we left, so as usual we had to fight to get reimbursed for that money.

It seems like the insurance agencies LOVE to say "that's not covered" or code it wrong so you then have to fight them over it. They are hoping you'll give up.

Wow! Actually I do try to help others in need, and have many times leant a hand to low income parents, and children without. It has been the best thing I have every done. I genuinely feel sorry for you, if you can turn your back on a sick child and still find peace in your life.

BUT, want to know where the government wastes most of our money???

War in Iraq - 12 billion a month!!! Enough said!!

This is for emergencies. Go ahead and get cancer and see what they say.

Then why don't you just cancel the insurance and freeload, since they "cannot deny you treatment, it's against the law."?

Oh, because if you did that, you'd see just how it really works?

In the late 60s and early seventies I had a child with Cancer. When he was first admitted to the hospital I signed a form that I was responsible for the payment of the Hospital and Doctor bills. 5+ years later, two major operations and lengthy stays in the hospital. I owed just a bit of money. This bill was paid in full by me. It took almost 15 years but it was paid. A lot of people said I was stupid for doing so, but anything else would have felt like charity, and I take a lot of personal pride in being self sufficient, and an independent God fearing American citizen.

And there it is - ya'll want this post to get closed? Keep going...
