Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Ha ha - look at that drake. Thinks he's a peacock. He's quite the handsome gent though!

Cute basket of ducklings, GC!!!

SM, I'm sure things are getting you down... Really hope it all goes ahead as planned and then you can get on with getting better. Hope you are feeling ok soon.

QJ, if the chick is otherwise healthy then the stuff on its down shouldn't be a problem - it should eventually come off. But if the chick is doing poorly otherwise then I agree that it might be a good plan to post in the relevant section. Hope the little one comes good.

What is the stuff on it 70%C? have you seen this before?

Let's see, that basket of 24 ducklings has quite a variety in it... The ones with the black stripe on the top of their heads are Silver Appleyards, the ones that are speckled and spotted are Anconas and the pale ones with faint markings (like the one right in front) are Saxonys. Then there is about half that are various mixtures from my own stock. Half of them I had purchased from Holderread's. The one in my husband's hand is an Ancona duckling. I enjoyed all of them a lot, sold a bunch of them though, 24 is about my maximum for winter carry over, if I want to be able to take good care of them!

Not seen it first hand, just on another forum. Putting the chick under a broody seems to be the fastest way to fluff them up. If the chick has hatched wet and slimy and then become dry it's associated with a low level of moisture loss from that particular egg (ie. egg too wet). But if the chick hatches already dry and crusted up then it can be to do with humidity that's too low during the hatching period. Giving them a gentle wash with cotton balls and warm water would probably help. Might take a few goes.

Thanks for the info, I hope all is okay she hasn't posted in a while.

Where is everybody? I am doing as good as expected. Doc gave me some strong antibiotics to get rid of some of the infection. I cleaned the carpet today. Checked eggs I got in and no heartbeats yet.

I see some strange things though that I had that I had not seen in the other eggs I had seen. In 3 or 4 of the eggs I see a circle of fluid (yolk) maybe, moving around in the yellow yolk. Is that the start of the heart or what is it?

This will be my third surgery on that toe. First time was four years ago. I had a bone spur an the joint was destroyed so they took the joint out and put a rod in it. Well I bent the rod. So February 14the doctor went in and took 6" of hip bone out and put it in my toe with a steel plate over it. Well I somehow broke the plate.! So now he is going in Monday to take the plate out and put a specially designed plate in with some stem cells in too help healing. If I lose the toe, oh well. As long as that's all I lose. Lol

The eggs I have in the incubator are on day 3 and they are duck eggs that I bought on here in an auction. First time I have bought egg, second time I am hatching.

oh geeze sounds like that toe is a big pain in the toot!!!
