Hey guys, sorry to not give an update until now. eBay egg #2 has pipped, and the first three are chipping away at the crack line. I keep thinking the first egg is zipping, but it is taking FOREVER! I have not seen anything from the last 2 eggs, but they were a day behind, so I have not given up hope yet for them.

Bakin, it sounds like your babies are getting ready to hatch. About 5 days before hatch, they will start tuning inside egg to get into pipping position. When that happens, the air cell makes that change called a drop down or draw down. When this happens, I position egg so that side dropped down is up and stop turning them.

SM, polyvisol is sold at walmart for $7 in the pharmacy section. It is a vitamin drop for infants. Add to water, and put a little in spoon to offer. You can add a pinch of sugar to make it taste better. Twist had no problems eating kale tossed in it, and I put it in bator to help the new babies we had to hatch.

Cute chickies, SM! Silkies always look so surprised.

A colleague of mine is having her baby today so we celebrated at work by opening a bottle of French champagne while she labours in agony. So now I am somewhat tipsy and waiting for it to wear off so I can go home and have my Friday night. Yes, it's already Friday night here. Hooray!! Except I am still at work having had too much champagne.

I'm new to this thread and new to hatching. I'm getting some Ancona eggs from AuroraSprings and am so excited! They are supposed to be delivered on Saturday. Do I let them settle for a day before I put them in the incubator? Some of the eggs are already getting a little old (laid on 2/8 and on--this was from the "Take a Chance" auction). Any advice?

Hi Christine and welcome to the thread!! I see you have Swedish ducks - me too!

A lot of people advise to let the eggs settle for 24 hours on arrival. However I personally would set the eggs right away if they are on the older side. With really fresh eggs you can afford to wait. But with slightly older eggs (ie getting towards a week old) I think that the benefit of resting is outweighed by the benefit of not letting them get any older.

Hey Christine! Glad to see you! When you get the eggs, let them slowly come to room temp vertically with point end of egg on bottom. It should only take a few hours. Then put them into bator. Do not wait the full 24 hours. Once in bator, leave them alone for 24 hours, then start turning 3-5 times per day.

What kind of bator? Still air or fan? Auto turner? Also, what kind of thermometer and humidity gauge are you using?

Yay! We are going to hatch our "take a chance" eggs together! :D

I'd like to let you all know that I'm sitting in the backyard on a lovely late summer's evening with a glass of local red wine and a bowl of imported Ranch flavoured cornnuts and my duckies quietly wandering here and there. I've got the weekend ahead of me. Does life get better? No. I am content.
