Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

JZ- Back up off Marty's eggs! Or I'll come up there and dump green jello on your head.

I wondered what she was talking about in the PM! Too funny. Seriously, thats so sweet of yu QJ. Your next in line after Jaz for magpie eggs this October, when I've won the eggs, hatched out half, and got them to lay when its almost winter. Don't worry, I use lights, and there will be enough eggs for us all to have cute little penquin duckies waddling about the premises!

Ok, Sebastopol genders, the only way to be 100% before they lay an egg is to A: DNA test, or B: Vent sexing. How ever boys can hide their parts when trying to vent sex them. The coloration of goslings at hatch is not reliable as there have been a number of girls that had boy coloring over the last year.

Vent sexing is something I recommend duck and goose hatchers to try and perfect. Watch the Metzers video on it. Then if you have an older duck and drake practice on them. This way you KNOW what you should or should not be seeing. I even vent sex our call ducklings and have buyers that bought last year because I did and they didn't have to wait for feathering to know what they had.

Just mucked out the STINCKULY ancona pen. Gave baby duckies a bath. Ate, ect. So now I am back! :D

QJ, that egg is probably from the odler hen, since you other one is YOUNGER then my WH, and they arent even laying (which really makes me mad!)

You think its fertile?

We have a magpie call duck here who will always live here. One of her legs was twisted up behind her head at hatch, we were able to get back under her, but it is unusable. "spot" lives in the Mandarin pen where she is safe and can get around the easiest. She comes in the house if our temps get too low in the wi ter months.

Yippee!!! Celtic's eggs are set! Now I need to figure out how to make room for the silver apples in my ducky bator so I can move them over in the morning. This is going to be a challenge!

I've wanted to try this! It would be so nice to be able to seperate out future layers from dinner time duckies.... (Yeah, well, I gotta do something with all the non-laying not needed as dad duckies!)

Is there a link to this video Celtic??

Im gonna try this with my little babies from the store

Good idea. Practice on the insignificant popcorns first, or better, an adult of known gendor, like the wise Celtic suggested.

oh, and thanks for the link. En route.....

Thanks Celtic! That was a very helpful video. I'll be practicing that like 250 times in the next 4 monthes.

Can't keep up with you, girl!

Say, hows little man doing? I wish I had a baby again... The "baby" is 6 now, time for another, except I'm getting on a bit in years..... It took many miscarriages to get the two I have. (sigh)

Guess I'll go buy more eggs instead!
