Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

So if its dead, do you remove it? How do you know absolutely that it died? I have 1 that has done nothing at all. And the 2 I thought were close have done nothing either.

Oh come on quackerjack! You know were just playing

we missed you! Lol!

sorry about the ducky!

There is no harm in leaving them provided the eggs are not going bad....if there is any dark or purple discolouration on the shell surface that means the egg is going bad and I'd remove it. Otherwise just leave them. They are helping to keep the temp steady, and, besides, you know what people say when you open the incubator!!

X2 I smelled the incubator through the vent holes, and it stunk! So I looked threw the window, and I saw a egg with purple discoloration, so I quickly opened the bator took it out, smelled it (it stunk) put it in a plastic bag, and threw it out...

That's promising.

Hatching is tough....they have to switch all their systems over from absorbing oxygen through the veins that they've developed near the egg surface to breathing with their little lungs. It's a perilous time and everything has to go just right for it to work.

I'm beginning to think it is a very delicate situation that I just HAPPENED to get right on accident for this one little ducky. Should I up my humidity to 80%?

I know what you mean, QuackerJack - after all the stories I've heard I reckon that getting even one duckling to hatch in an incubator is a major achievement.

Humidity of 70 is good for the hatch - unless your air cells are unusually large (more than a thid of the egg) I'd stick around that.

There is a dark discoloration on the egg I think is a goner. It's almost like a shadow from within the egg. I also can see like.. You know how in cartoons or kid movies, when someone gets thrown against a wall and then they slide down it? It's like that. Like the duck slid down the side of the egg.

One more thing: Is there a way to tell if the egg is getting too much moister on the inside?

Air cells are all good size. About.... I'd say they are 1/4 of the egg and then a day before hatch they are sloping off to the side and taking about less than 1/3 of the egg.
(I hope I'm making sense.)

Ok I am back. I looked again and the 2 I thought were hatching do look odd. They both have dark spots and a kind of yellow tint starting. They are both side by side towards the back of the incubator. What should I do? I am going to go hair dry the dog ans then I will try to see if pics will show it. BRB
