Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Good morning everyone! I spent the night in my office last night to be close to my duck eggs. My hubby thinks I'm pretty silly right about now:) My little mallard baby was working all night long scratching and pecking at his shell. He peeped at me a few times in the middle of the night! He has not broken through but is working very hard and consistently. I am hoping to see a happy and health duckling today!

Yay! Do you have anything to measure the humidity in there? I'm just worried little guy might be shrink wrapped and need help if it isn't high enough. If he hasn't pipped by late afternoon you might want to pip a little hole so he can breathe.

CG, awesome news and picture!! You are on the home stretch now!! I'm excited for you!!

=) thankyou.
icould have done it without you guys.
grandma believes you never help one hatch or it will be weak.
these twins will prove her wrong.

they are both alternating between resting aand trying to wiggle out of the shell.

We are hatching our first pekin/buff mix! Still waiting,

I didn't know we had them either. That's what took me so long to find what the heck the egg was. I think it's pretty neat, and can't wait to see a chick zip longways. It says on the internet they only stay with momma 3-6 weeks, so I don't know how long he'll stick around. Hopefully he likes his silkie momma and turkey brothers and stays awhile if I get him to hatch.
Will you be letting her forage with them? If he leaves qucik he might need a lesson or two in his native environment to ensure survival. But, personally, I hope he becomes attached to the easy barnyard life!

My roo has started crowing. He sounds pathetic, like someone trying to make rooster noises with a kazoo. I let everyone out, and he is upset that his duck buddies ditched him to find water to play in.

I told him to go talk to the silkies if he wanted company.

I collected WH eggs today, thinking I would put whatever they laid on the bator, and there was a HUGE duck egg! Its a double yolker to! What would happend if I hatched it? Would there be conjoined twins? Or just twins?

Mine don't make it in the bator. In fact, the 3 biggest eggs (like sebbie eggs almost) of the 12 Jumbo Pekings were the first to get tossed from the bator. Doubles just don't make it ususally. The one and only time one hatched, it did hatch two tiny babies, but only with help. They died.

both now have heads free.

Thank you Julie! I tried to measure the humidity with a shoelace and thermomater. It looks to be about 80 percent. I will try to make a hole in the afternoon if there is no progress. I heard the first noises about 8pm last night. I hope he makes a hole very soon!

Haven't decided yet. I want to brood it with the poults so it'll have company (although I think quail would be better, turkeys are what I've got due then). I don't think that I trust a broody with the poults though, so I may be brooding it. Raised starlings before, and I don't think raising this little guy will be much different than a funny looking quail chick that eats live food. I would love it if he stick around. I'll keep him supplied with lots of goodies hoping he'll stick around.

Then you can wait awhile if you just heard him at 8. They can take up to 48 hours to pip after internal pip, I usually give them 36 from when I know they've pipped and intervene.
