Thread formerly known as Hatch day is today

Here are two of my Anconas that hatched yesterday! The one laying down looks dark chocolate. I'm not sure about the one standing up. At first I thought he was all yellow, but around his face he does have some very light brown markings. My daughter named them Pickles and Snuggles. I still have one in the incubator that I helped halfway out, but he wasn't ready. I had one die in the shell yesterday morning and I was afraid the last one would die, too.

Is there anything you can do if you jumped the gun and hatched before they were ready? I rinsed off the bottom of the incubator and put him on a soft cotton cloth and kind of rolled up another one around him. He seems to like to feel snuggled up like that. Is there anything else I can do for him?

Your babies are so cute! I think I just had this problem w/Lucky. I kept the shell damp while he finished off his stuff, then just waited it out, kept him in the bator (humid) until he got out all the way. Last night (after he was out of shell and the bator was losing humidity so he'd dry) I gave him a couple of drinks of sugar water, and some this morning. After a day and a half, he's about where a new hatch (unassisted) would be. He was akward, and didn't use both sides evenly or anything until a few hours ago. He just rested a lot. Good Luck!

Morning Iain - Happy bidding! Good Luck on your eggs. Nobody else has mentioned bidding thus, so go for it. You know how it is, some still bid against you, the just don't advertise it. So who knows??

Morning Peeps!

Lucky lives on. He can't really stand, seems a little slow on using his R.leg, and a little weird about his head, but overall is stronger, and I found two poops on his paper towel, which I consider to be apositive. If that part didn't work, the rest was wasted effort. He is moving about the bator, however he's doing it. Still sleeps and rests a lot, but I'm sure is holding his head up a bit better.

He is still getting drink of sugar water (I just dip his beek, and he's going for it). I will be making a watered down mash in an hour or two, when he gets his brooder. I have button quail going on lockdown tonight, so gotta clean up, sterilize, and see if I can get my still air gova to get to and hold a temperature of 99.5. So far, not w/o a fan.

Maybe I just need to give it longer.

Hi & Good Morning!

I just wanted to thank everyone on this thread, especially Iain Utah, Marty1876 and JulieNKC, for their help and support with our hatch last week. Thanks to your advice, we had a successful hatch, and now we have a healthy duckling in the brooder.

Here are some pictures of the hatch!

Your duckling is adorable! Congrats! And pats on the back to Iain, Marty and Julie! Great coaching!

Don't feel foolish! You took some wonderful photos! We all love them!

Hi Everyone - just wanted to update you guys... our first little pekin egg has broken through the shell. It has a hole about the size of a nickel now from starting about 3 hours ago...

I have another newbie question: What happens when ducks cross breed say a pekin and a khaki campbell or a pekin and a cayuga? Do you get a mixed looking duck or do one of the genes dominate?

Thirdly, I have one egg that I think has two babies. It seems to be getting larger too or maybe it is my imagination. I haven't seen a lot of positive outcome for multiples. Here's a picture of some eggs during this morning's candling. It is the egg on the left. From left to right I think the eggs should be pekin (possible double yolk), pekin, buff, snowy, snowy and west india. We do have more male ducks than females right now...

Go little pekin!

Yes, yes yes!!!! Just got this picture with the beak out. We have to run out until about 4pm and it is hard leaving this guy! My kids have already named it early bird and peek-a-boo. I just thought about something else... one of my pekin is 3 yr old and all my other females are 1 yr old. (We have lost a lot of females to predators) Does their age affect egg fertility?

Well, Happy to report that Lucky is walking around well, eating mush, and drinking water. He's in the brooder now with a baby chick from the other group.
Heres the newest pics....

Here is lucky trying to catch me as I try to snap a pic, he's bonding to me great.

Lucky snacking on mush

Its so nice that he's going to make it. He is doing just great. Totally healthy now, like the last day and a half never happened. He's certianly
caused me more trouble that other duck hatches, but I guess we'll just have to spoil him/her.

Aww. Love Lucky! So happy to see her walking around!

Well, sold my last four runner ducklings this morning. I'm sad. I know they went to a good home, but one of them was the one hubby helped to hatch and another was the duckling with the cutest feet in the whole world!

I'm totally hiding the ones I want to keep in the bathtub next hatch. I know I can't keep them all, but I should have taken pick of the "litter" with the first hatch. Guess I lost my chance when little Pocket died.

I've still got the three huge pekins. They are such sweet ducklings. They all seem to like to nibble on the sleeves of my shirt.

I totally can sympathize with you. I have an extra mallard drake that I keep for sentimental reasons.
